Tasting notes

Aglianico from Montemarano at 500 meters delivers a wine with dark cherry, dried herb, and iron-tinged earthiness, held together by the grape's characteristically firm tannin and bright acidity. The 18-month aging in large Slavonian oak adds texture without masking the terroir. Zero sulfite additions and minimal intervention let the grape and the vintage speak directly.

Gioviano is Il Cancelliere's Irpinia Aglianico DOC, sourced from the contrada Iampenne in Montemarano, a village in the province of Avellino at 450 to 550 meters elevation. The vines are approximately 20 years old, planted on clay-limestone soils with a north-facing exposure, trained in vertical trellis with spurred cordon pruning. Yield is held to 70 quintals per hectare.

In the cellar, grapes are destemmed and undergo alcoholic fermentation with about 20 days of skin maceration at ambient temperature, followed by pressing with a pneumatic press. The wine then rests on fine lees in stainless steel for roughly 6 months, spends approximately 18 months in large 35-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks, and ages a minimum of 12 months in bottle before release.

No filtration, no fining, no stabilization, and no added sulfites at any stage. Gioviano is listed at RAW WINE and VinNatur, two natural wine fair circuits that require adherence to strict no-additive standards. Total sulfites remain below 10 mg/L.

Irpinia Aglianico DOC gained its appellation in 2005 and sits within Campania's Avellino province, the same zone that produces Taurasi DOCG. Montemarano is one of the more elevated and cooler subzones, giving the Aglianico longer hang time and firm but refined tannins compared to warmer lowland expressions.

Built for food with weight and fat. Braised short rib, lamb shoulder with rosemary, wild boar ragu, or a plate of aged Caciocavallo Silano are natural partners. The acidity and tannin also cut through fatty pork-based salumi from Campania well.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Il Cancelliere

Il Cancelliere is a family estate in Montemarano, Avellino province, Campania. The Romano family has grown Aglianico on these clay-limestone slopes for generations, with commercial production and bottling beginning in 2005 at the urging of the younger generation. Today the estate is run by Soccorso Romano and his wife Pasqualina, with son Enrico overseeing viticulture as the estate agronomist and daughter Nadia Panetta handling marketing.

The vineyards lie in the contrada Iampenne and contrada Chianzano areas of Montemarano, between 450 and 600 meters elevation, planted entirely to Aglianico. Il Cancelliere is an organic producer and does not use chemical fertilizers or synthetic treatments in the vineyard. Harvesting is done by hand.

In the cellar, winemaking is guided by oenologist Antonio di Gruttola. Fermentation uses native yeasts, maceration runs at ambient temperature, and aging takes place in large-format Slavonian oak casks rather than barriques. No filtration, fining, stabilization, or sulfite additions are used at any stage. The resulting wines are listed with both RAW WINE and VinNatur.

Wine region

Campania, Italy

Campania is a southern Italian region on the Tyrrhenian coast, extending inland through the Apennine foothills to the province of Avellino. The interior zone known as Irpinia sits northeast of Naples at elevations generally between 400 and 700 meters. The combination of altitude, volcanic and calcareous-clay soils, and pronounced day-night temperature swings during the growing season results in late-harvesting grapes with strong aromatic components and firm structure. Irpinia received its own DOC designation in 2005, covering a range of indigenous red and white varieties.

The three flagship appellations within Irpinia are Taurasi DOCG, Fiano di Avellino DOCG, and Greco di Tufo DOCG, all recognized internationally. Irpinia Aglianico DOC covers the broader zone and allows 100% Aglianico with no minimum aging requirements before release, making it a more approachable tier than Taurasi while still drawing on the same clay-limestone and volcanic subsoils. Montemarano, where Il Cancelliere is based, is considered one of the prime Aglianico subzones for Taurasi production and sits at the higher end of the elevation range, typically delivering more structure and acidity than warmer valley-floor sites.
