Product description

Folicello John Doe Orange 2023 is a skin-contact white wine made from 100% Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, an aromatic grape variety native to Emilia-Romagna. At their organic estate in Castelfranco Emilia near Modena, Marco and Antonella hand-harvest the grapes from clay and sandy soils in the Po Valley, then macerate them on their skins for approximately three weeks in stainless steel tanks. Spontaneous fermentation proceeds with indigenous yeasts, and Folicello John Doe Orange 2023 is bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfite additions. The extended skin contact builds tannic structure and aromatic complexity characteristic of natural orange wines.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Folicello

Folicello began in the early 1980s when Marco Giovannini and Antonella Fontana decided to make wine for themselves and friends at their property in Castelfranco Emilia, near Modena. What started as a hobby rooted in countryside traditions has grown into a respected organic estate, though the couple's philosophy remains unchanged: produce authentic, living wines that reflect their connection to the land.

When Marco and Antonella began farming organically, such practices were rare in Italy and considerably more challenging than today. Their commitment extends beyond basic organic certification—the winery generates all its electricity from solar panels, uses fermentation byproducts to create vine treatments, and maintains biodiversity throughout the estate. In 2022, their daughter Irene joined the operation, bringing fresh energy to vineyard management and harvest coordination.

The estate spans approximately 10 hectares on the fertile Po Valley plains, with soils composed of clay, silt, and sand. Folicello focuses on indigenous Emilia-Romagna varieties: Lambrusco Grasparossa, Sangiovese, and Malbo Gentile for reds; Pignoletto, Montuni, Trebbiano, Pinot Bianco, and Malvasia di Candia Aromatica for whites. All grapes are hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts. The wines see no sulfur additions during production and are bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Beyond wine, Marco and Antonella produce organic grape juice, fruit jams, and traditional balsamic vinegar in a dedicated facility—products that reflect the diversified agricultural traditions of Emilia-Romagna. For them, winemaking represents a lifestyle choice rather than purely commercial pursuit, demonstrating that quality and sustainability can coexist.

The Folicello range includes several expressions worth exploring: Lambrusco Pét-Nat, Rosato Pét-Nat, John Doe Rosso, and Bianco Pét-Nat. Browse the full selection alongside other best-selling natural wines.

Wine region

Emilia–Romagna, Italy

Emilia-Romagna occupies a broad swath of northern Italy, running 240 kilometers from the western border with Piedmont and Liguria to the Adriatic coast in the east. The region takes its name from the ancient Via Aemilia, the Roman road that connected Rimini to Piacenza and still forms the backbone of regional transport. Bologna serves as the capital, while Modena, Parma, and Reggio Emilia anchor the western Emilia zone where Folicello is located.

The landscape divides between the flat Po Valley plains to the north and the Apennine foothills rising to the south. Folicello's vineyards in Castelfranco Emilia sit on the alluvial plains, where centuries of river deposits have created composite soils of clay, silt, and sand. These fertile lowlands differ markedly from the hillside vineyards of Romagna, producing wines with distinct character and approachability.

Viticulture in Emilia-Romagna dates to the Etruscans in the seventh century BCE. The region now cultivates over 53,000 hectares of vines, producing roughly 6.1 million hectoliters annually—placing it among Italy's most prolific wine zones. Primary varieties include Trebbiano (30% of plantings), Lambrusco (18%), and Sangiovese (16%), alongside indigenous grapes like Pignoletto, Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, Montuni, and Malbo Gentile.

Orange wines have found receptive ground in Emilia-Romagna, where producers apply skin-contact techniques to aromatic local varieties. Malvasia di Candia Aromatica proves particularly suited to this style, its naturally intense aromatics amplified by maceration. The grape thrives in the provinces of Parma, Piacenza, and Modena, producing wines ranging from still to sparkling, dry to sweet.

Beyond wine, the region claims Italy's richest culinary heritage: Parmigiano-Reggiano, prosciutto di Parma, aceto balsamico tradizionale, and fresh pasta traditions that pair seamlessly with local wines.
