Tasting notes

This is Nero d'Avola stripped of its usual heaviness: 5 days of skin contact and 6 months on lees in steel give it a bright ruby color, fresh raspberry and black pepper aromatics, and a saline, citrus-edged finish that reflects the vineyards' proximity to the sea. Alberello-trained bush vines on clay and limestone in western Sicily rather than the grape's home turf in the southeast make this a distinctly coastal, lower-alcohol expression of the variety.

Ghammi is 100% Nero d'Avola grown in the hinterland of Marsala and Mazara del Vallo in western Sicily. The vines are 10 to 20 years old, trained in the traditional alberello (bush vine) system on clay and limestone soils roughly 6 km from the coast. Grapes are hand-harvested into crates and farmed organically without pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers.

In the cellar, grapes are destemmed and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, with 5 days of skin maceration. Pressing is done with a vertical basket press. The wine rests on the lees for 6 months before bottling without fining or filtration. Sulfites are minimal at bottling.

The result is a bright ruby red wine with fresh, expressive aromatics: raspberry, black pepper, Mediterranean herbs, and a saline, citrusy edge on the palate. It drinks with more energy and lift than most warm-climate Nero d'Avola, reflecting the sea influence at this western extreme of the island.

Ghammi is classified as Terre Siciliane IGT. Viteadovest is a joint project of the Portelli-Puleo and Angileri families, with winemaker Vincenzo Angileri overseeing production. The estate spans five hectares across six parcels cultivated for over a century.

Works well with Sicilian caponata, Neapolitan-style pizza, and fennel sausage. The wine's citrus freshness and saline edge also make it a good match for grilled or salt-baked fish, bacalao preparations, and tomato-based pasta dishes. Serve slightly cool, around 60-62F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Viteadovest

Viteadovest is a family estate located in Marsala on the western tip of Sicily. It was formed from the merger of vineyards belonging to two families, the Portelli-Puleo and the Angileris, whose land has been under vine for over a century. The estate spans five hectares divided into six parcels distributed across the municipalities of Marsala and Mazara del Vallo. The Angileri family, including Giuseppe (father), Vincenzo (son), and Giuseppe Jr. (grandson), tends the vineyards, with Vincenzo Angileri acting as winemaker and consulting enologist for other Sicilian producers.

Nearly all the vines are trained in the traditional alberello (bush vine) system, which keeps yields low and is well-suited to the hot, windy conditions of western Sicily. The estate farms without pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers. Grapes are hand-harvested into crates to arrive at the winery as intact as possible. In 2013, following decades of selling fruit to cooperatives and local Marsala wine factories, the Angileris resumed bottling their own wines under the Viteadovest label.

In the cellar, grapes are destemmed and allowed to begin fermenting spontaneously from their own weight in tank, without added yeasts. All musts undergo skin maceration, with duration varying by wine. Pressing is done with a vertical basket press. Wines ferment without additions through the end of malolactic fermentation and age on lees in stainless steel before bottling unfined and unfiltered. Sulfites are kept to a minimum. Annual production is approximately 60,000 bottles across the full range.

Wine region

Sicily, Italy

Sicily is Italy's largest island and sits at the southern tip of the country in the central Mediterranean. The climate is hot and dry with long growing seasons, low rainfall, and consistent sea breezes that moderate temperatures, particularly on the western coast near Marsala and Mazara del Vallo. This western zone, historically known for producing Marsala fortified wine, is now a source of dry, low-intervention table wines. Soils here are predominantly clay and limestone, with flat plains and low hills, and vineyards sit at around 100 meters above sea level within a few kilometers of the coast.

Sicily's most widely planted red grape, Nero d'Avola, accounts for roughly 20% of total regional wine production. It appears across more than 20 DOC and IGT designations. Ghammi is classified under Terre Siciliane IGT, the island-wide geographic indication created in 2011. Other notable Sicilian red varieties include Nerello Mascalese and Frappato, the latter used in the island's only DOCG, Cerasuolo di Vittoria. Sicily's hot, dry conditions make organic farming practical, and the island has a high concentration of certified organic producers.
