Tasting notes

This is a rare serious attempt to rehabilitate Mission, California's oldest cultivated grape, through co-fermentation rather than chemical correction. The Petite Sirah fraction adds spine and pigment to what is otherwise a translucent, low-tannin grape, producing a wine with red berry, bitter orange peel, and a savory, spice-tinged finish that you won't find from any other California red.

Free Your Soul is a co-fermentation of 67% Mission from Somer's Vineyard and 33% Petite Sirah from Jag's Vineyard, both in the Mokelumne River AVA, Lodi, California. Alcohol is 12.5% ABV. The Mission grape — California's first cultivated vinifera variety, brought north by Franciscan missionaries in 1769 — is naturally low in acid and color, with bountiful yields that resist concentration. The Petite Sirah blending fraction is a practical solution: it contributes structure, extract, and yeast nutrients without requiring acid additions or commercial yeast nutrient supplements.

Petite Sirah was harvested September 9 at 21.5° Brix and loaded as whole clusters into an open-top fermentor. Mission followed two days later on September 11 at 20.4° Brix, de-stemmed and added on top. Cap management relied on vigorous foot-treading and soft punch-downs. The wine was pressed to neutral French oak barriques as soon as tannin pickup from the Petite Sirah gained traction, then aged six months in barrel.

Somer's Vineyard sits along a bend of the Mokelumne River, with deep Tokay series sandy loam soils. The vines are tall, cordon-trained, and approximately 50 years old, with roots that reach the water table. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered with 15 ppm sulfur (KMBS) added at bottling.

The wine's light body and modest tannins suit dishes that would overwhelm a bigger red. Try it with roast chicken, pork carnitas, charcuterie, or a tomato-based pasta. It also works well slightly chilled alongside spiced lamb sausage or aged jack cheese.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Wonderwerk

Wonderwerk was founded in 2017 by Issamu Kamide and Andrew Lardy, two high school friends originally from Virginia. Andrew studied enology at Fresno State and worked at several Central Coast wineries before co-founding the label. Issamu pursued brand management in Virginia before relocating to Los Angeles to work in consumer packaged goods, eventually reaching WSET Level 3. The project launched after the two spent an evening at Despacio, a traveling discotheque created by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem and the Soulwax brothers, and asked themselves how they might make a wine that captured that feeling.

Wonderwerk operates as an urban winery based in Gilroy, California, sourcing fruit from a rotating selection of vineyards across the state. The label's stated minimum standard for vineyard sourcing is sustainable farming, with most vineyards practicing organics and pursuing certification. Soils across their source vineyards are predominantly sandy and alluvial. Andrew Lardy serves as winemaker and also works as Head Distiller at Spirit Guild Distillery in Los Angeles; Issamu Kamide handles marketing and business development.

Wonderwerk's winemaking approach centers on co-fermentation, carbonic maceration, and skin contact across different grape varieties. Wines are produced with native yeast, no fining, and no filtration, with small sulfur additions at bottling only. Free Your Soul uses a strategic co-fermentation of Mission and Petite Sirah to address Mission's structural shortcomings — specifically its low acid, weak color, and low tannin — without resorting to acid additions or commercial yeast nutrients.

Wine region

California, United States

The Mokelumne River AVA is the largest and most historically significant of Lodi's seven nested sub-appellations, covering 85,700 total acres with over 40,000 acres of planted wine grapes in northern San Joaquin County. Established in 2006, it sits approximately 38 miles southeast of Sacramento and encompasses the city of Lodi, Woodbridge, Acampo, and Victor. The appellation takes its name from the Miwok phrase meaning 'the place of the fish net,' referencing the river that flows from the Sierra Nevada through the appellation and into the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.

The defining characteristic of the Mokelumne River AVA is its Tokay series deep sandy loam soil — fine-grained, free-draining, and up to 90 feet deep — which naturally moderates vine vigor and yields. The climate is Mediterranean, with warm, sunny summers tempered by afternoon Delta breezes funneled through the Carquinez Strait directly from the Pacific via San Francisco Bay. This makes Mokelumne River the coolest of Lodi's seven sub-appellations during the growing season. The appellation is best known for old-vine, own-rooted Zinfandel, but also grows Petite Sirah, Carignan, Cinsaut, and — at Somer's Vineyard along the river — Mission.
