Tasting notes

This is a genuinely aromatic white that stays precise and dry: elderflower, apricot, grapefruit peel, and a flick of fresh mint, all held together by bright, saline acidity from the gravel-loess soils of Hohenruppersdorf. At 11.5% ABV it drinks effortlessly, but the varied skin-contact protocol across the three grapes gives it more texture and complexity than its lightness suggests.

Flora is a blend of Riesling, Scheurebe (Sämling 88), and Gelber Muskateller grown biodynamically in Hohenruppersdorf, a village in the eastern Weinviertel of Lower Austria, about 30 kilometers northeast of Vienna at 240 meters elevation. The vineyard soils are gravel with a loess overlay, which gives the wine its characteristic mineral tension and bright acidity.

The name Flora comes from the state of the vineyard at harvest time: the ground cover is still in bloom when the grapes are picked, and the wine's aromatic profile reflects that. Gelber Muskateller and Scheurebe receive 3 hours of skin contact before a slow, 8-hour press; Riesling gets 18 hours of skin contact before pressing. Everything is then blended and fermented spontaneously in stainless steel without temperature control, then aged on the lees for 6 months in tank. A small dose of sulfur is added only just before bottling.

Weingut MG vom SOL holds Demeter biodynamic certification. The vineyards are worked with horses and Breton dwarf sheep, which are small enough to graze between the vine rows. Barrel wood for the estate's other wines comes from Gindl's own forest. The 10-hectare farm has practiced mixed agriculture since 1807 and has been in Gindl's family since that date.

The 2019 vintage Flora comes in at 11.5% ABV, dry, unfined, and suitable for vegans. It is a light, aromatic, and mineral-driven white with a persistent floral lift from the Muskateller and a citrus-edged backbone from the Riesling.

Flora's bright acidity and floral aromatics make it a natural match for white fish, oysters, and herb-dressed salads. It also works well alongside lightly spiced vegetable dishes, soft fresh cheeses, or a simple plate of charcuterie. The Muskateller in the blend handles asparagus and artichoke better than most whites at this price.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Weingut MG vom SOL

Michael Gindl was born in 1983 in Hohenruppersdorf and finished agricultural school in 2002. The family farm, which has been in Gindl hands since 1807, has always operated as mixed agriculture combining crops, livestock, forestry, and viticulture. After his grandfather's death, Gindl took over vinification responsibility while still in school. A Christmas 2004 tasting of a spoiled 2003 Welschriesling, compared against his grandfather's still-fresh 1979 and 1983 wines, convinced him to fundamentally change direction.

Gindl transitioned from conventional, highly reductive winemaking to biodynamic farming, earning Demeter certification around 2012, at which point he also renamed the property MG vom SOL. The name references both his initials and the oldest documented vineyard in Hohenruppersdorf, first recorded in the 14th century. He farms approximately 10 hectares using horses and Breton dwarf sheep for vineyard work. Highland cattle have been on the property since 2012. The wood for the estate's acacia and oak barrels comes from Gindl's own forest.

In the cellar, Gindl works with spontaneous fermentation only, no temperature control, and avoids fining. For the Flora blend, each variety receives a different length of skin contact before a slow 8-hour press: Gelber Muskateller and Scheurebe get 3 hours, Riesling gets 18 hours. The wine ferments and ages for 6 months on the lees in stainless steel. A small dose of sulfur is added only just before bottling. The wine is suitable for vegans.

Wine region

Weinviertel, Austria

Weinviertel is Lower Austria's largest wine region, stretching from the Danube in the south to the Czech border in the north and the Slovakian border to the east. Hohenruppersdorf, where Gindl farms, sits at 240 meters elevation in the eastern part of the region, roughly 30 kilometers northeast of Vienna. The region receives around 500 millimeters of rainfall per year, making it one of Austria's drier growing zones. The continental climate produces significant day-to-night temperature swings, especially in autumn, which preserves aromatic intensity and acidity in white grapes.

Weinviertel DAC, established in 2002 as Austria's first Districtus Austriae Controllatus appellation, is reserved exclusively for Grüner Veltliner. However, the region also grows Riesling, Scheurebe, Gelber Muskateller, Welschriesling, and various red varieties. Soils vary considerably across the zone: the eastern sub-region around Hohenruppersdorf is characterized by gravel and sand overlain with loess deposits, which provide good drainage and a lime-rich topsoil that contributes mineral precision to the wines grown here.
