Tasting notes

The Viognier inclusion in a Grenache-Syrah-Merlot blend is a deliberate choice that pushes this wine toward something floral and textured rather than just ripe and heavy — unusual in Terra Alta and worth paying attention to. It is a first vintage from producers who know exactly what they are doing, made from a named single vineyard farmed by a local grower in one of Catalonia's most compelling inland wine zones.

Escollades is a field blend of Red Grenache, Viognier, Merlot, and Syrah sourced from the Escollades vineyard just outside Pinell de Brai, in the Terra Alta comarca of Tarragona, Catalonia. The vineyard is farmed by Josep Ramon Alabart. This is the debut vintage from Josh Eubank and Lara Peso Almazlinos, who otherwise operate Percy Selections, a natural wine importer distributing in California and New York.

Terra Alta sits at the southern edge of Catalonia, inland from the Ebro River, at elevations between 350 and 550 meters above sea level. Soils here are predominantly limestone and clay, poor in organic matter, with good drainage. The climate is a mix of Mediterranean and continental: long, hot, dry summers and cold winters, with the dry Mestral wind off the Ebro Valley keeping humidity low and disease pressure minimal — conditions well suited to low-intervention farming.

The blend is unconventional for Terra Alta. Incorporating Viognier alongside Syrah echoes the co-fermentation technique associated with Cote-Rotie in the Northern Rhone, where the aromatic white grape lifts color and adds floral character to the red. The addition of Merlot and Grenache rounds out the blend with fruit weight and structure. The wine is made with a natural, low-intervention approach consistent with Percy Selections' sourcing philosophy.

2019 was the first vintage produced under this label, making Escollades both an introduction to the project and a document of what the vineyard can do in the right hands.

The fruit weight and modest tannin in this blend pair well with roasted lamb shoulder, slow-cooked pork with herbs, or a Catalan-style bean and sausage stew. The floral lift from the Viognier also makes it a reasonable match for dishes with Mediterranean spice notes such as harissa-rubbed chicken or grilled eggplant with romesco.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

J.Eubank & L.P. Almazlinos

Josh Eubank and Lara Peso Almazlinos are the owners and operators of Percy Selections, a California- and New York-based importer and self-distributor of small-production natural wines. Under the J.Eubank & L.P. Almazlinos label, the two make their own wines in Pinell de Brai, Terra Alta. The Escollades 2019 is their first vintage under this label.

The grapes for Escollades come from the Escollades vineyard, farmed by local grower Josep Ramon Alabart outside Pinell de Brai. The winemaking approach is consistent with the low-intervention philosophy Percy Selections applies across its portfolio: organic viticulture, manual harvesting, and minimal cellar additions. Specific certified farming status for this vineyard has not been publicly confirmed.

Wine region

Catalonia, Spain

Terra Alta is the southernmost Denominacion de Origen in Catalonia, located inland in the western part of Tarragona province. The appellation covers twelve municipalities and takes its name from the high-altitude terrain — mountains in the region reach 950 meters, while most vineyards sit on slopes, valley floors, and plateaus between 350 and 550 meters above sea level. Pinell de Brai, where the Escollades vineyard is located, sits within this comarca along the Ebro River corridor.

The climate is a crossroads of Mediterranean and continental influences: summers are long, hot, and dry, winters are cold with occasional severe frost risk in spring, and average annual rainfall is around 400mm. The dry Mestral wind from the Ebro Valley reduces humidity and disease pressure, an advantage for growers working with minimal intervention. Soils are predominantly limestone and clay, poor in organic matter, with a high proportion of coarse elements that promote drainage. Garnacha Blanca (White Grenache) is the signature grape of the appellation, but red blends based on Garnacha Tinta, Carinena, Syrah, and Merlot are also produced. Terra Alta DO acquired official status in 1972.
