Producer profile

Conestabile della Staffa

Conestabile della Staffa Gamó 2021 is a natural red wine produced by Conestabile della Staffa winery in Umbria, Italy. This wine is made from a blend of Gamay and Ciliegiolo grapes, grown using organic and biodynamic farming practices. Gamó 2021 has a bright ruby-red color; the nose shows aromas of red berries, cherries, and hints of violets, accompanied by subtle earthy notes. It is fresh and vibrant on the palate, with juicy red fruit flavors, balanced acidity, and soft tannins. The wine has a clean finish with a touch of minerality. Gamó is bottled unfiltered and unfined, preserving its natural character. No sulfites are added.

Conestabile della Staffa is a winery located in Monte Melino, province of Perugia, Umbria Region. The history of Conestabile della Staffa goes back to Orvieto, a city famous for the white wine Orvieto, where the family, of noble origins, owned over 700 hectares of land. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Conestabile della Staffa was the most important winery in the Trasimeno-Perugino area, producing over 10,000 hectoliters of wine per vintage.

Nowadays, Danilo Marcucci leads Conestabile della Staffa. Danilo’s wife, Alessandra, owns Conestabile della Staffa, a descendant of the Counts who have owned the estate since ancient times.
Today, Conestabile della Staffa comprises 12 hectares of vines planted in the early 1970s. Danilo Marcucci, who has a long winemaking and farming career and often works as a sideman for Italy’s wine masters, such as Lino Maga, Eduardo Valentini, Cappellano, Vittorio Mattioli, and others, makes the wines in the most natural way possible.

Danilo Marcucci grows native grapes Grechetto, Trebbiano, Ciliegiolo, Sangiovese, Gamay del Trasimeno, Canaiolo, and, of course, Sagrantino, vinified with native yeasts, no chemicals, no added sulfites.

Wine region

Umbria, Italy

Umbria, located in central Italy, is renowned for its diverse and high-quality wines. Known as the "Green Heart of Italy," Umbria's rolling hills, fertile valleys, and favorable climate create ideal conditions for viticulture. The region is characterized by its varied terroir, which includes clay, limestone, and volcanic soils.

Umbria's wine production is deeply rooted in tradition, with many vineyards and wineries dating back centuries. The region is best known for its white wines, particularly those from the Grechetto and Trebbiano grapes. Orvieto, a historic wine-producing area, is famed for its crisp and refreshing white wines.

Red wines from Umbria are equally notable. Sagrantino, a grape native to the region, produces powerful and tannic wines, particularly in the Montefalco area. Sangiovese, often blended with other local varieties, is another key grape that produces robust and elegant wines.

Umbria's winemakers embrace traditional and modern techniques, with a growing emphasis on organic and biodynamic farming practices. The region's wines shine for their balance, complexity, and reflection of the unique Umbrian landscape.

Key appellations in Umbria include Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG, and Orvieto DOC. These designations highlight the region's commitment to quality and the distinctiveness of its wines.
