Tasting notes

This is a rare saignée red from a biodynamic estate in Southern Styria, where Zweigelt is run through a brief skin maceration and then aged in stainless steel — the result is a light, nervy red with tart cranberry, sour cherry, and earthy beet character that drinks beautifully chilled. Hartmut Aubell's 30-year-old vines on ancient gravel and calcareous marl give it a distinct mineral edge that separates it from fruit-forward rosés.

Der Rebenhof's Zweigelt Saignée is made from 100% Zweigelt grown on a single steep slope in Süd Steiermark, Austria's southernmost wine region. The vines are approximately 30 years old and rooted in ancient river and lakebed deposits of sandstone, gravel, and calcareous marl. The estate is Demeter-certified biodynamic, a status Hartmut Aubell has held since 2016.

Saignée (French for "bleeding") refers to the practice of drawing off a portion of juice after the red grape skins and must have rested together briefly — typically a few hours to a day. This short skin contact gives the wine its color and structure while preserving freshness and bright fruit. The wine is aged in stainless steel, keeping it clean and lively with no oak influence.

On the nose: hibiscus, dried rose petal, and fresh cherry. On the palate: tart cranberry, sour cherry, earthy beet, and a hint of pine forest. The acidity is lively and the tannins are minimal, making this an ideal candidate for a slight chill before serving.

Serve chilled alongside charcuterie, pork rillettes, or a Styrian-style fried chicken. The bright acidity and low tannins also make it a natural match for goat cheese, roasted beets, and mushroom dishes. Works well as a table wine through the whole meal when food is earthy or mildly fatty.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Der Rebenhof

Der Rebenhof is a family estate located at Ottenberg 38 in Ratsch an der Weinstraße, in Süd Steiermark. The family's connection to the property dates to 1924, when great-grandfather Ludwig Kempl first established ties to the land. Hartmut Aubell — known locally as Harti — took over and began producing wine (not just grapes) from the estate in 2008, becoming the first in the family to vinify.

Rebenhof spans 9.5 hectares along Austria's southern border with Slovenia. Aubell farms two main vineyards: the Witscheiner Herrenberg, with layers of sand, gravel, and silt, and the Ratscher Nussberg, composed of grey marl locally called Opok. He has practiced biodynamic methods since 2013 and the estate has held Demeter certification since 2016. Old vines on alkaline soils are central to his farming philosophy.

Aubell is known for working with multiple aging vessels simultaneously — including hermetically sealed Austrian milk tins and custom Stockinger fuder — and releases wines when he judges them ready rather than on a fixed schedule. The Zweigelt Saignée is aged in stainless steel, preserving the grape's fresh, tart character without wood influence. Winemaking details beyond vessel type are not publicly disclosed by the producer.

Wine region

Südsteiermark, Austria

Südsteiermark (Southern Styria) sits along Austria's southern border with Slovenia, covering roughly 2,600 hectares of steep, south-facing hillsides. The climate blends Mediterranean warmth from the south with continental cool nights, producing grapes with high natural acidity and aromatic intensity. Vineyards are planted on sedimentary soils formed from ancient Paratethys sea deposits — primarily coarse-grained alluvial gravel, marl, clayey silt, and calcareous sandstone locally called Opok, the same material as Ponca found in Italy's Collio and Slovenia's Brda across the border.

Südsteiermark received DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) status beginning with the 2018 vintage and is primarily a white wine appellation, with Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling, Morillon (Chardonnay), Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Muskateller as the permitted DAC varieties. Red wines, including those made from Zweigelt, fall outside the DAC framework and are labeled under the broader Steiermark designation. All vineyards in the DAC system must be harvested by hand. The region is subdivided into villages including Gamlitz, Ehrenhausen, Leutschach, and Eichberg, and Kitzeck-Sausal at elevations up to 564 meters.
