Tasting notes

This is Primitivo in its most restrained, high-altitude form: blood orange, rosemary, and sage on the nose, with a juicy, lively palate kept honest by the limestone soils and cool Murge nights. At 13.5% ABV with no filtration and only 150 cases made, it is a precise, site-specific wine from one of Gioia del Colle's leading organic producers.

Volere Volare is a 100% Primitivo from Pietraventosa, grown in Gioia del Colle on the Murge plateau in central Puglia at roughly 350 to 400 meters above sea level. The vineyards, planted in 2003 in the Contrada Parco Largo district, sit on karst limestone bedrock with thin, iron-rich red clay topsoils. Vines are trained in the traditional alberello (bush-vine) method. Farming is certified organic by ICEA.

The 2013 vintage was fermented with indigenous yeasts, aged 2 months in neutral wooden casks followed by 12 months in stainless steel, then bottled without filtration. Only 150 cases were produced. At 13.5% ABV, it is lighter in alcohol than many Puglian Primitivos, a result of Gioia del Colle's altitude and pronounced diurnal temperature variation, which preserves natural acidity.

On the nose, the wine shows blood orange, rosemary, and sage flower alongside soft tobacco. The palate is juicy and lively with fine tannins and a dry, mineral finish. Gioia del Colle Primitivo is a distinct biotype from the richer, lower-altitude Primitivo di Manduria, expressing more freshness and spice than extraction.

Primitivo is genetically identical to Zinfandel and Croatian Tribidrag, confirmed by DNA analysis in 2001. The Gioia del Colle DOC, established in 1987, is considered the historical home of the variety, where 18th-century botanist Don Francesco Filippo Indellicati first selected and named it Primativo for its early ripening.

The soft tannins and blood-orange acidity make this a natural match for orecchiette with sausage ragu, slow-roasted lamb with herbs, or aged caciocavallo. It also works well alongside grilled pork ribs or a board of cured meats and aged provolone.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Pietraventosa

Marianna Annio and Raffaele Leo founded Agricole Pietraventosa in 2005 in Gioia del Colle, in the Contrada Parco Largo district at roughly 380 meters above sea level on the Murge plateau. Neither came from a farming background: Raffaele trained as an engineer and worked designing winemaking equipment, drawing inspiration from his grandfather, a winemaker in Torre Santa Susanna in the province of Brindisi. Marianna, born in Gioia del Colle, leads the farming and cellar work. Their first harvest was in 2005.

The estate's vineyards, planted between 2003 and 2006, span approximately five hectares. Three of the plots are trained in the traditional alberello (bush-vine) system. Soils are limestone and clay with a high iron content that gives the earth its distinctive red color. The winery holds organic certification from ICEA and is a member of FIVI, the Italian Federation of Independent Winegrowers. All wines are made exclusively from estate-grown fruit.

In the cellar, fermentation is triggered by indigenous yeasts only. Volere Volare is aged in stainless steel, preserving freshness and natural fruit character, with brief contact in neutral wooden vessels depending on the vintage. Wines are bottled without fining or filtration. Production of Volere Volare is limited; the 2013 vintage yielded only 150 cases.

Wine region

Puglia, Italy

Gioia del Colle DOC sits on the Murge plateau in central Puglia at around 360 to 400 meters above sea level, positioned roughly halfway between the Adriatic and Ionian seas. The appellation was established in 1987 and covers approximately 123 hectares of registered vineyard. Soils are karst limestone with thin, iron-rich ferrous red clay topsoils, a combination that naturally constrains vine vigor and adds a tangy mineral quality to the wines. Diurnal temperature swings during the growing season can reach 20 degrees Celsius, which slows ripening in the final weeks before harvest and preserves the natural acidity that defines the style.

Primitivo is the anchor grape of Gioia del Colle DOC. Varietal wines must be 100% Primitivo with a minimum of 13% ABV; Riserva bottlings require 14% ABV minimum and at least two years of aging. The Gioia del Colle expression of Primitivo is distinct from Primitivo di Manduria to the south: higher altitude, leaner soils, and cooler nights produce wines that are lower in alcohol, brighter in acidity, and more mineral in character. Puglia IGT is a broader designation used by producers whose wines fall outside the strict DOC parameters, allowing more flexibility in winemaking and blending.
