Tasting notes

This is one of the more honest expressions of Catalan white varieties: saline, citrusy, and taut with no winemaking tricks to smooth it over. The inclusion of near-extinct Vinyater adds a textural grip and herbal edge that you won't find in any conventional Penedès white.

VN Vinel.lo Blanco is a field blend of seven white varieties grown organically on calcareous clay soils in the Massís de Bonastre, Baix Penedès, at 150 to 200 meters altitude roughly five kilometers from the Mediterranean coast. The grapes are Xarel-lo, Vinyater, Moscatel, Garnacha Blanca, Parellada, Macabeu, and Parsé. Several of these — including Vinyater — are rare indigenous varieties close to extinction that were never accepted into the official Penedès DO, which is why this wine is labeled Vino de España.

The name references vinel.lo, a traditional low-alcohol Catalan table wine style. Winemaking follows a rolling ferment: each variety is harvested, destemmed, and added to the tank sequentially as it comes in, with one to two days between additions, allowing the native yeasts from each variety to interact and ferment together. After one to three days of skin contact, the wine ferments in stainless steel and rests on lees for two months before bottling. No fining, no filtration, no added sulfur at any stage.

Production is approximately 10,000 liters per year. The wine is dry, light-bodied, and defined by its briny minerality and snapping acidity — nothing here that resembles the sweetness or effervescence of Cava made from the same grapes. Serve well-chilled.

The wine's salinity and high acidity make it a natural match for raw or simply prepared seafood — oysters, grilled sardines, or clams with olive oil and garlic. It also works well alongside sushi, goat cheese, or light pasta with herbs and lemon.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Partida Creus

Partida Creus was established around 2001 by Massimo Marchiori and Antonella Gerosa, an Italian couple originally from Piedmont who had been working as architects in Barcelona. Around the turn of the century they left the city and settled in Bonastre, a small village in the Massís de Bonastre in the Baix Penedès. The name Partida Creus refers to the stone crosses historically used to mark land boundaries in the area. Their first vintage from estate vines was 2007.

Their vineyards sit at 150 to 200 meters altitude, approximately five kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea, across 22 hectares with six currently planted to vines. Soils are calcareous clay. Farming is entirely organic and the estate ceased all sulfur additions in 2013. Though they initially held organic and biodynamic certifications, they withdrew from the certifying body in 2017, citing concerns about regulatory focus on bureaucracy over actual farming practice. All fruit is hand harvested.

Partida Creus focuses on recovering old and near-forgotten indigenous Catalan varieties — Sumoll, Vinyater, Garrut, Cartoixa Vermell, and others — that neighboring growers had abandoned or replaced with international varieties. In the cellar, fermentation is always spontaneous with native yeasts, and the wines are bottled without fining, filtration, or added SO2. The VN Vinel.lo Blanco uses a rolling fermentation technique in which each variety is added to the tank sequentially as it comes in from harvest, allowing the yeasts from each grape to ferment together.

Wine region

Penedes, Spain

Penedès is a DO in Catalunya, located in the coastal hills between Barcelona and Tarragona in northeastern Spain. The region divides into three altitude-based subzones: Baix Penedès along the lower, warmer coastal zone; the central Mitja Penedès valley; and the higher Alt Penedès, which reaches up to 800 meters above sea level. Soils are predominantly calcareous clay with sand and limestone, poor in organic matter and well-drained. The climate is Mediterranean with hot, dry summers, mild winters, and moderate rainfall in spring and autumn, though maritime breezes moderate temperatures in coastal zones like Baix Penedès.

Penedès is historically the birthplace of Cava, and its dominant white varieties — Xarel-lo, Macabeu, and Parellada — are the same grapes used in sparkling wine production. The DO permits both still and sparkling wines across red, white, and rosé styles, though Cava carries its own separate DO. A subset of producers, including Partida Creus, operate outside the DO framework entirely, labeling wines as Vino de España because they work with indigenous varieties like Vinyater that have never been authorized by the regulatory body. Priorat and Montsant lie to the southwest; the Penedès DO itself encompasses 66 municipalities.
