Tasting notes

This is what Valpolicella tastes like when it's not trying to impress anyone: translucent ruby, barely 10.5% alcohol, bright red cherry and white pepper with a mintiness from the Molinara. The 1-liter format and screwcap make it the most honest bottle on the table.

Vino Nato Disobbediente, which translates to "Wine Born Disobedient," is a 1-liter table red that Carlo Venturini and Alessandra Zantedeschi make primarily for their own table. In generous vintages, they export a small quantity. It is a Vino Rosso, intentionally outside the Valpolicella DOC appellation system. The 2020 is 60% Corvinone and 40% Molinara, both biodynamically farmed on pergola-trained vines on restored ancient terraced vineyards in the Valpolicella Classico zone near Castellroto.

Winemaking is minimal: grapes are hand harvested and destemmed, pressed for free-run juice only, and undergo a short 5 to 6 day maceration. Fermentation proceeds with native yeasts in stainless steel, and the wine is aged in cement tanks. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered with a small sulfite addition for stability, sealed under screwcap in a 1-liter format.

The result is translucent ruby in color, light in body, and low in alcohol at around 10.5%. Flavors lean toward bright red cherry, white pepper, and a faint mintiness, with soft tannins and a fresh finish driven by natural acidity. It is a chillable everyday red in the spirit of the family's own drinking habits, not a showcase wine.

Monte Dall'Ora's soils on their particular ridge are limestone with a reddish hue. The first 15 meters are soft and porous, allowing vine roots to penetrate deep into the calcareous subsoil. Portions of the vineyard are built on ancient dry-stone terraces called marogna. The estate has been farmed organically since 1995 and biodynamically since 2006.

Chill it down to around 55F and pour it alongside charcuterie, pasta with tomato sauce, or fried fish. The low alcohol and high acidity make it an easy match for lightly seasoned vegetable dishes and mild aged cheeses. It handles a simple pizza margherita better than almost anything else at this price.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Monte Dall'Ora

Carlo Venturini and Alessandra Zantedeschi founded Monte Dall'Ora in 1995 on one of the five limestone ridges that descend through the center of Valpolicella. Both come from vignaioli families in the region, but chose to start a new estate rather than inherit existing operations. When they acquired the terraces, the land was in poor condition and required extensive restoration, including the rebuilding of ancient dry-stone marogna terraces.

The estate has been farmed organically since its founding in 1995, and converted to biodynamic agriculture in 2006. Vines are either selection massale or grafted on American rootstock, and are all trained in the traditional Pergola Veronese style. Carlo has identified this training system as essential in Valpolicella's climate: it creates airflow under the canopy, shields the sun-sensitive Corvina and Corvinone from direct heat, and produces smaller, more concentrated clusters than Guyot would allow. The soils on their specific ridge are limestone with a reddish hue, soft and porous to 15 meters depth, enabling deep root penetration. Olive trees, cherry trees, aromatic herbs, and grasses grow throughout the vineyard, consistent with biodynamic biodiversity principles.

Winemaking at Monte Dall'Ora follows a minimal-intervention approach. For Vino Nato Disobbediente, grapes are hand harvested, destemmed, and lightly pressed to extract only free-run juice. Maceration lasts 5 to 6 days with pump-overs twice daily. Fermentation uses only indigenous yeasts, first in stainless steel, then the wine is aged in cement tanks. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered. A small dose of sulfites is added at bottling for stability. The wine is sealed with a screwcap and sold in 1-liter bottles.

Wine region

Veneto, Italy

Valpolicella sits in the northwestern corner of the Veneto, just east of Lake Garda and north of Verona. The Classico zone, which includes the communes of San Pietro in Cariano, Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella, Fumane, Marano, and Negrar, occupies a series of parallel ridges and valleys descending from the foothills of the Alps. Soils vary by ridge but are predominantly limestone and clay, often with reddish hues from iron-rich deposits. Lake Garda tempers the climate, keeping winters mild and summers ventilated. Average annual rainfall is around 500 to 600 mm, and the proximity of the lake basin makes the area prone to summer thunderstorms.

Valpolicella DOC and Valpolicella Classico DOC cover lighter, fresh reds made primarily from Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara. The same grapes, when partially dried in lofts called fruttai, produce Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG (dry) and Recioto della Valpolicella DOCG (sweet). Valpolicella Ripasso DOC is made by re-fermenting Valpolicella wine on the leftover Amarone grape skins. Wines that fall outside appellation rules, such as Vino Nato Disobbediente, are labeled simply as Vino Rosso.
