Tasting notes

Pure Mourvèdre from Faugères schist is rare — this shows exactly why the variety earns its place in the south: black olive, dark cherry, cracked black pepper, and a savory iron-mineral edge from the soil. It has enough tannin to reward patience but enough fruit to drink now with the right food.

Vin d'Orage is a single-varietal Mourvèdre from Clos Fantine, grown on the schist hillsides of Faugères in the commune of Cabrerolles, Hérault. The estate's vines are trained as untrellised bush vines (gobelet), which the Andrieu siblings consider essential to the biodiversity and balance of the site. Row middles are left unplowed — grasses grow through summer and sheep graze them down in winter.

Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeast, the only method the family uses across all their wines. Corine Andrieu, who studied oenology at Montpellier, avoids pump-overs entirely, instead breaking cap by pouring wine over the top. The wine is unfined, unfiltered, and bottled with no added sulfites. Vinification takes place in concrete vats, consistent with the estate's broader approach of aging each variety separately before any blending decisions are made.

Mourvèdre is a late-ripening variety that thrives on Faugères schist, a metamorphic rock that absorbs heat during the day and releases it at night, allowing the grape to ripen fully without loss of structure. The result is a wine with concentrated dark fruit, black pepper, garrigue, and firm but integrating tannins. The 2018 vintage in Languedoc was warm and dry, producing wines of depth and structure with good natural concentration.

Sold as Vin de France, as 100% Mourvèdre falls outside Faugères AOC blending requirements, which mandate at least two grape varieties.

Works well with lamb shoulder, grilled merguez, or slow-braised short ribs — the tannins want animal fat. Hard aged cheeses like Comté or Manchego hold up to the wine's savory profile. Avoid delicate fish; the grape's structure will overwhelm it.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Clos Fantine

Clos Fantine is a family estate in Cabrerolles, within the Faugères AOC. Siblings Carole, Corine, and Olivier Andrieu took over the domaine in 1997 following the death of their father, who had been a member of the Autignac cooperative and a pioneer of organic viticulture in the appellation. Their grandmother was born in the house where they continue to live and work, making this a multi-generational property. In 2000 they built a gravity-fed cellar designed to move grapes without mechanical pumps and began fermenting exclusively with indigenous yeasts. By 2004 they had eliminated all sulfur additions from the winemaking process.

The estate covers approximately 30 hectares of organically farmed vines, planted with Mourvèdre, Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault, Syrah, Terret Blanc, Terret Gris, and Aramon — a very old variety with vines on the property dating to 1915. All vines are trained as untrellised bush vines (gobelet). Row middles are not plowed; grass grows in summer and sheep graze it in winter, supporting soil biodiversity.

Corine Andrieu, who studied oenology at Montpellier, oversees winemaking. Carole handles commercial operations and Olivier manages the vineyard. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeast — the family considers this the most important element of their winemaking. Rather than pump-overs, cap management is done by pouring wine over the solids. Each grape variety is vinified separately and aged in concrete vats, typically 18–20 months, before any blending decisions are made. All wines are bottled unfined, unfiltered, with no added sulfites.

Wine region

Languedoc, France

Faugères is an AOC in northern Hérault, roughly 20 kilometers northwest of Béziers, in the foothills of the Massif Central. Its seven communes — Autignac, Cabrerolles, Caussiniojouls, Faugères, Fos, Laurens, and Roquessels — sit at elevations ranging from 150 to 500 meters, with vineyards planted on south-facing terraces. The climate is Mediterranean: hot, dry summers and mild winters, moderated by altitude and the Tramontane wind descending from the northwest, which dries vineyards after rain and reduces fungal pressure. This wind is a significant reason organic viticulture is so prevalent here.

Faugères is the only AOC in Languedoc whose soils are homogeneously schist across the entire appellation. This metamorphic rock — the compressed ancient seabed lifted by the formation of the Alps and Pyrenees — is deep, free-draining, and heat-retentive, absorbing warmth during the day and releasing it overnight. That thermal quality is critical for late-ripening varieties like Mourvèdre, which can fully mature here in ways it cannot in cooler sites. Yields are naturally capped by the poor, stony substrate at around 30–33 hectoliters per hectare. Red wines must be blends under AOC rules, with Syrah, Grenache, Lledoner Pelut, and Mourvèdre required to make up at least 50% of the blend. Single-varietal wines are sold as Vin de France.
