Tasting notes

Four months of skin contact on Moscatel Galego delivers a wine that is simultaneously floral and grippy: rose petals and lychee on the nose, then grapefruit pith and tangerine zest on the palate with enough tannin to keep everything in check. The schist and granite soils at 600 meters pull through as a clean mineral thread from start to finish.

Uivo Curtido is a skin-contact white wine made from 100% Moscatel Galego grown on 35-plus-year-old vines across 2 hectares of schist and granite soils in the Cima-Corgo sub-region near Alijó, at roughly 600 meters elevation. Grapes are hand-harvested in September, undergo rigorous sorting in the vineyard, and are partially de-stemmed directly into 5,000-liter cement tanks without mechanical pressing.

From there, the wine macerates on skins for four months. Spontaneous fermentation with ambient yeasts runs approximately three weeks under temperature control. After pressing, the wine rests on lees for two months without stirring, then ages in cement tanks for six additional months. No fining, no filtration, no added SO2.

The result is an intensely amber-yellow wine with a haze from the natural sediment. Moscatel Galego is an aromatic variety, and the extended skin time amplifies its natural perfume while adding textural grip and phenolic structure. Expect rose petal, lychee, tangerine, and grapefruit alongside a mineral wet-stone note that runs through the finish.

Tiago Sampaio farms organically and uses biodynamic and regenerative techniques across his holdings in Sanfins do Douro. The Uivo label, launched in 2007, was among the first in Portugal to produce pet-nat and curtimenta (skin-contact white) at commercial scale.

The tannic structure and citrus-forward profile make this a natural alongside dishes with fat, spice, or acidity. Try it with bacalhau (salt cod) preparations, Goan-style fish curry, charcuterie, or aged semi-firm cheeses. It also holds up well against dishes finished with ginger, lime, or orange zest.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Folias de Baco

Folias de Baco was started in 2007 by Tiago Sampaio, who grew up in Porto but spent weekends and harvests in his family's Douro vineyards. He studied agricultural engineering in Santo Tirso, spent five years at university in Vila Real, and completed a PhD in Viticulture and Enology at Oregon State University before returning to the Douro to establish his estate.

Tiago is based in Sanfins do Douro, a village in the Cima-Corgo sub-region at around 700 meters elevation. His vineyards span 20-plus hectares across several plots, some over 80 years old and planted as traditional field blends of dozens of indigenous varieties. He farms organically and employs biodynamic and regenerative techniques to build soil health. The Uivo label was among the first in Portugal to produce pet-nat and curtimenta (skin-contact white) at commercial scale.

Winemaking under the Uivo label is guided by minimal intervention: native yeasts only, no fining, no filtration, and no added sulfur. Fermentation and aging take place in cement tanks, which are inert and temperature-stable, preserving fruit character without imparting oak flavor. Tiago also works with clay amphora for some wines in the portfolio.

Wine region

Douro, Portugal

The Douro Valley in northeastern Portugal is one of the world's oldest demarcated wine regions, formally delimited in 1756. It divides into three sub-regions: Baixo Corgo in the west (coolest, highest rainfall), Cima-Corgo in the center (the heartland of fine Port and dry wine production, centered on Pinhão, with roughly 19,000 hectares under vine), and Douro Superior to the east (hottest and driest). The Serra do Marão blocks Atlantic moisture from the west, producing a harsh continental climate with summers regularly exceeding 40°C and cold winters. Vineyards sit on steep terraced slopes — many hand-worked — at elevations ranging from near river level to approximately 700 meters inland.

Soils in Cima-Corgo are predominantly schist with sizable granite deposits, particularly at higher elevations. Schist drains well and forces deep root growth, concentrating flavors and contributing the mineral character common to wines from this zone. The Douro has over 80 authorized indigenous grape varieties; the dominant reds are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão, while white varieties include Moscatel Galego, Gouveio, Rabigato, Viosinho, and Malvasia Fina. Though best known for Port, the region now produces roughly equal volumes of dry table wine under the Douro DOC designation.
