Tasting notes

Pigato in a pét-nat format is rare, and Selvadolce's terraced, sea-facing site gives this wine a saline, stony edge that you do not find in most sparkling whites. The bubbles are fine and lively, lifting notes of white peach, dried wildflowers, and fresh sage before a clean, almond-bitter finish typical of the grape.

Turbolento is a pétillant naturel made from 100% Pigato grapes grown on biodynamically farmed, terraced vineyards near Bordighera in western Liguria, a few kilometers from the French border. The vines, planted in the mid-1970s, sit at approximately 150 meters above sea level on calcareous soils. The site faces the sea and is regularly swept by the Maestra wind, which deposits microscopic sea-salt crystals on the grapes and soil. Grapes are hand-harvested.

Turbolento is produced by the méthode ancestrale: the wine is bottled before fermentation finishes, so the natural CO2 from residual sugar creates the bubbles in-bottle. No secondary fermentation starter or dosage is added. The wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, is bottled unfiltered, and contains minimal added sulfites.

Pigato is a white grape native to the Riviera di Ponente zone of western Liguria, genetically related to Vermentino but distinct in its broader texture, lower-pitched acidity, and characteristic bitter-almond finish. It produces wines with aromas of white peach, wildflowers, honey, and fresh sage alongside a saline, mineral backbone driven by the coastal terroir. In the Turbolento, the pét-nat format adds a fine, lively effervescence that keeps the wine fresh and expressive.

The wine is classified under the Terrazze dell'Imperiese IGT, the appellation that covers the hills of the Imperia province in western Liguria. It is produced without fining and with no filtration, and arrives with natural sediment typical of the style.

Serve with fried anchovies, grilled branzino, or Ligurian focaccia topped with olives. The wine's saline minerality and bitter-almond finish also make it a strong match for trofie al pesto or pansoti with walnut sauce. Works well as an aperitivo alongside a plate of cured meats and fresh vegetables.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Tenuta Selvadolce

Tenuta Selvadolce is a 7-hectare estate located on the hillsides of Bordighera in the extreme western corner of Liguria, a few kilometers from the French border. The property has been a working flower farm for over a century. The vineyards, which include Pigato and Vermentino vines planted in the mid-1970s, were part of the family land when Aris Blancardi took over the estate in the early 2000s. The first vintage under the current wine program was released in 2007.

Aris Blancardi holds a veterinary degree from Tufts University in Boston. After returning to the family farm, he enrolled in a horticulture and viticulture course in the Langhe, where he was introduced to biodynamic farming. Contact with Nicolas Joly deepened his commitment to the approach, and in 2004 he began the full conversion of the estate to biodynamics. The estate uses the 500 and 501 biodynamic preparations and avoids herbicides, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides. The south-facing terraces benefit from a strongly marine climate and are regularly exposed to the Maestra wind.

In the cellar, Aris follows the same minimal-intervention philosophy. All wines undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. No filtration is used. Sulfites are kept at minimal levels. The Turbolento is produced by the méthode ancestrale: the wine is sealed in bottle while primary fermentation is still active, capturing the naturally produced CO2. This produces a cloudy, gently sparkling wine with fine, persistent bubbles and natural sediment in the bottle.

Wine region

Liguria, Italy

Liguria is one of Italy's smallest wine regions, stretching in a narrow coastal arc from the French border in the west to La Spezia in the east along the Mediterranean. The region covers approximately 6,000 hectares of vineyards, most of them on steep, terraced hillsides that are too rugged for mechanical farming. The climate is Mediterranean, with mild winters, warm summers, and consistent sea breezes that moderate temperatures and help maintain acidity in the grapes. The western subregion, the Riviera di Ponente, is also regularly affected by the Maestra wind, which brings salt air directly from the sea onto the vines.

The dominant appellations in western Liguria are Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC, which covers Pigato and Vermentino whites as well as Rossese reds, and the broader Terrazze dell'Imperiese IGT, used for wines from the Imperia province hills. Pigato is the signature white grape of the Ponente, grown in a small geographic band between Albenga and Imperia. It produces wines with floral aromatics, citrus and stone-fruit character, a saline mineral backbone, and a distinctive bitter-almond finish. Soils in the zone are predominantly calcareous limestone and clay, with the terraced vineyards typically planted facing the sea at elevations between 100 and 300 meters.
