Tasting notes

This rosé behaves like a light red: real tannin, enough body to stand up to food, and a flavor profile of sour cherry, cranberry, and pomegranate with a faint clove note that comes from the grape itself. It is one of the few single-varietal Tavkveri rosés available outside Georgia, made from a vine that still requires interplanting because of its functionally female flowers.

Artana's Tavkveri is a dry rosé made from 100% Tavkveri grapes grown in the village of Kistauri, in the Kakheti region of eastern Georgia. Tavkveri is a dark-skinned grape native to Kartli with functionally female flowers, meaning it must be interplanted with hermaphroditic vines to pollinate. It is most commonly used in red and rosé blends across Georgia, but here it is bottled as a single varietal.

The grapes are pressed into qvevri without stems. Fermentation begins naturally within 24 hours and is stirred 3 to 5 times daily. After approximately two days, the grape solids are separated using a Godori, a traditional cylindrical basket, and the juice is moved to a clean qvevri where fermentation continues for 3 to 4 weeks. The qvevri is then sealed until winter, allowing the wine to settle undisturbed. No fining, no filtering, and no sulfur added.

Despite its rosé classification, this wine has the structure and presence of a light red. The short skin contact imparts some tannin and a deeper color than most rosés, with lively acidity and fruit driven by cherry, cranberry, and raspberry, alongside a faint spice and floral note from the grape itself.

Artana Wines was founded in 2014 by Anastasia Akhvlediani and Mariam Palavandishvili, grandchildren of Dimitri Rcheulishvili, whose family purchased vineyards in the village of Artana in 2007. The winery is certified organic by the Natural Wine Association of Georgia and produces all wines in qvevri using spontaneous fermentation.

Works well with grilled chicken, charcuterie boards, and light pasta dishes. The wine's tannin and acidity also hold up against Georgian dishes like grilled meats with walnut sauce. Try it slightly chilled at around 55F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Artana

Artana Wines is owned by Anastasia Akhvlediani and Mariam Palavandishvili, grandchildren of Dimitri Rcheulishvili. Rcheulishvili was a 19th-century engineer who worked on railway construction in Manchuria and eastern Russia, later returning to Georgia and purchasing land in Vazisubani, Kakheti. His descendants purchased vineyards in the village of Artana, located on the southern slopes of the Caucasus, in 2007. The winery was formally founded in 2014.

The vineyards are dry farmed and organically managed. Artana Wines is certified by the Natural Wine Association of Georgia. Grapes are hand harvested. The winery grows Rkatsiteli, Saperavi, Kisi, and Tavkveri across its estate plots, including vineyards in the villages of Artana and Kistauri in the Telavi district of Kakheti.

All wines are fermented with native yeasts in qvevri, the traditional Georgian clay amphorae buried underground. Grapes are pressed directly into the qvevri without stems. Fermentation is stirred multiple times daily and typically lasts 3 to 4 weeks. Grape solids are separated after a short maceration using a Godori basket. The qvevri is then sealed through winter, and the wine is racked to a clean qvevri in December to remove sediment. No fining agents, filtration, or sulfur additions are used.

Wine region

Kakheti, Georgia

Kakheti is located in eastern Georgia, stretching along the foothills of the Greater and Lesser Caucasus mountains. The region accounts for roughly 76 to 80% of Georgia's total grape harvest and sits at elevations between 250 and 800 meters above sea level. The climate is continental, with warm dry summers and cold winters. The Likhi Ridge blocks most moist air from the west, keeping Kakheti significantly drier than western Georgian regions. The Alazani and Iori rivers regulate vineyard conditions in the valley floors, where alluvial soils dominate. Higher slopes feature cinnamonic soils, a reddish calcareous clay with elevated iron content characteristic of Kakheti's key growing zones.

Kakheti holds 20 of Georgia's 29 registered PDO appellations, concentrated along the Alazani Valley. The most recognized include Tsinandali (dry white, Rkatsiteli and Mtsvane), Mukuzani (dry Saperavi red, three years aging), and Kindzmarauli (semi-sweet Saperavi). The region's two signature varieties are Rkatsiteli for whites and Saperavi for reds, though producers also grow Kisi, Mtsvane, and Tavkveri. Traditional Kakhetian winemaking involves extended skin contact in qvevri buried underground, a method inscribed by UNESCO on its Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013.
