Tasting notes

Carbonic maceration on Languedoc Syrah from sandy organic soils gives this wine a plush, fruit-driven character: dark cherry, violet, and a thread of garrigue with soft tannins. It is the kind of low-intervention Syrah that drinks like a more serious wine than it lets on.

Jeremy Quastana's 2017 Syrah is a Vin de France red made from 100% Syrah grapes sourced from certified organic vineyards in the Languedoc, near Pic Saint-Loup. Frost in 2017 wiped out much of his Loire estate, so Quastana purchased grapes from outside the region under a special administrative exemption, then transported them back to his farm in Fresnes, Loir-et-Cher, to vinify. The source grapes come from sandy soils and carry organic certification.

Vinification follows Quastana's standard low-intervention approach: carbonic maceration, native yeasts, no added sulfites, unfined, and unfiltered. The carbonic technique, which Quastana refined working alongside Marcel Lapierre in Beaujolais, produces a wine that is fruit-forward and soft-textured rather than extracted or tannic. No new wood is used.

Syrah from the Languedoc grown on sandy soils tends toward a lighter, more aromatic style than the dense, structured expression of the northern Rhone. Handled carbonically, the result leans toward dark fruit, garrigue, and violet rather than the peppery power often expected from the grape. Drink now with a slight chill.

Works well with lamb merguez, grilled eggplant with harissa, or a board of aged sheep's milk cheese. The soft tannins and fruit-forward profile also make it a natural match for duck confit or charcuterie. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 60-62F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Jeremy Quastana

Jeremy Quastana started making wine in 2012 from a small farm in Fresnes, Loir-et-Cher, a few kilometers from the holdings of Olivier Lemasson of Les Vins Contés. As a history student, Quastana had worked for Lemasson as his sole employee and spent more time in the cellar than in class before enrolling in a winemaking program in Bordeaux. After graduating, he completed internships with Marcel Lapierre in Beaujolais and with Louis-Antoine Luyt at Clos Ouvert in Chile before returning to the Loire.

Quastana purchased 2.2 hectares of vines in Touraine and spent over two years converting the 40-to-50-year-old Gamay and Cot plantings to organic viticulture. The vineyard is a single plot on a gentle slope of clay over silex. His regular lineup includes carbonic Gamay, Cot, and Pinot Noir, all vinified with no added sulfur when the vintage allows, unfined and unfiltered. In frost and hail years, he has purchased certified organic fruit from outside the Loire under special administrative exemptions to maintain production volume.

Quastana's winemaking approach draws directly from his time with Marcel Lapierre: carbonic or semi-carbonic maceration, native yeasts, minimal sulfur, no new wood, and early bottling to preserve freshness. His cellar is a converted barn on his farm in Fresnes, with thick-walled surface storage providing natural temperature stability. The 2017 Syrah followed this same protocol, with grapes from Pic Saint-Loup brought back to Fresnes for fermentation and bottling.

Wine region

Loire Valley, France

Quastana's estate sits in Fresnes, in the Loir-et-Cher department of the Loire Valley, near the Cheverny appellation south of Blois. The soils on his 2.2-hectare parcel are clay over silex, a flint-rich subsoil common to this part of the Sologne plateau. The climate here is semi-continental with oceanic influence, moderated by the large forests of the Sologne. Frost risk is real: both 2016 and 2017 forced Quastana to source fruit elsewhere after his own parcels suffered significant losses.

Because the 2017 Syrah was sourced from Languedoc rather than the Loire, the wine is labeled Vin de France rather than under any Loire appellation. The source grapes come from the Pic Saint-Loup area, a sub-appellation of Languedoc known for red wines built on Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre. Sandy soils in that zone produce lighter, more aromatic expressions of Syrah. Quastana's own Loire estate normally works with Gamay, Cot, and Pinot Noir under the Vin de France designation, with no formal appellation claim.
