Tasting notes

Malagousia at Kontozisis has a distinctly oily, round texture that sets it apart from the crisper, more austere expressions produced in northern Macedonia. The concrete egg aging preserves the grape's aromatic lift — white peach, citrus blossom, fresh sage — while lees contact rounds the mid-palate into something genuinely complete. Free-run only, unfiltered, and from a producer certified organic before most Greek wineries knew what that meant.

Sun White is made from 100% Malagousia grown on the foothills of Mount Agrafa, across estate vineyards in Kanalia and Dafnospilia in the Karditsa prefecture of Thessaly. The 11-hectare estate is farmed at low yields of around 28 hectoliters per hectare, with all grapes hand-harvested and only free-run juice used — no press at any stage.

Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts in a concrete egg. The wine then rests on its lees in the concrete egg for 3-4 months with periodic stirring, followed by 3 more months in stainless steel before being bottled unfiltered with minimal sulfite addition (around 35 mg/L total). No fining, no commercial yeasts, no oenological additives.

In the glass, Sun White is pale lemon-green. The nose leads with yellow flowers, citrus blossom, white peach, and a touch of fresh sage. The palate is round and slightly oily in texture, with lemon citrus and melon fruit and a clean, refreshing finish. The lees aging adds breadth without masking the grape's aromatic character.

Malagousia was nearly extinct by the 1970s and has since been revived as one of Greece's most expressive white varieties. Kontozisis, certified organic since 1991, is among the earliest producers to work with it in Thessaly rather than the more common northern Macedonia sites.

The wine's floral aromatics and oily texture work well with grilled branzino or sea bream with lemon and herbs. It holds up to dishes with some fat — think pan-roasted chicken with artichokes or a yogurt-dressed grain salad with cucumber and mint. Dry Malagousia is one of the few whites that can handle artichokes without falling apart.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Kontozisis

Kontozisis Organic Vineyards is based in Karditsa, Thessaly, where Andreas Kontozisis and his partner Aphrodite Tousia run an 11-12 hectare estate planted across two distinct terroirs in Kanalia and Dafnospilia, on the foothills of Mount Agrafa. The winery was founded initially to supply the family's own restaurant, with Kontozisis and his father and brother planting and reviving over a hundred small plots, many of them previously abandoned.

The estate has held certified organic status since 1991, making it one of the first wineries in Greece to receive that certification. At the time, organic agriculture had little commercial traction in Karditsa's local market, but Kontozisis continued without synthetic chemicals in vineyard or cellar. Vines are managed at low yields — around 28 hectoliters per hectare — and all grapes are hand-harvested.

In the cellar, no press is used at any stage: all wines are made from free-run juice only. Fermentation is spontaneous using indigenous yeasts. Kontozisis produces two main white wine lines from Malagousia: the Sun White, which ferments and ages in concrete egg and stainless steel before bottling unfiltered with minimal sulfites; and the A-Grafo Malagousia, a zero-sulfite, skin-contact orange wine. No fining agents or oenological additives are used across the range.

Wine region

Thessaly, Greece

Thessaly sits at the heart of continental Greece, flanked by the Pindus Mountains to the west and bounded by Mount Olympus in the northeast. The Karditsa prefecture, in the western part of Thessaly, is an inland wine zone with a continental climate: hot, dry summers and cold winters, with significant diurnal temperature swings driven by cool mountain air descending from the Agrafa range. These temperature contrasts help grapes retain acidity despite the warmth of the growing season. Soils in the Karditsa zone range from clay to limestone with gravel, producing wines with texture and moderate aromatic intensity.

Karditsa holds the PGI Karditsa appellation, nested within the broader PGI Thessalia designation, which covers all four Thessaly prefectures (Karditsa, Larissa, Magnesia, Trikala). The nearby PDO Mesenikola, also in Karditsa prefecture, focuses on red wines. Indigenous white varieties Malagousia and Roditis are the main white grapes of the area, while Limniona is the flagship red of Karditsa, a variety indigenous to Thessaly that was itself nearly extinct before local producers worked to revive it.
