Tasting notes

Soki Soki is one of the only dry, skin-contact Zibibbo wines made from 80-plus-year-old alberello vines on Pantelleria — a grape and place almost entirely associated with sweet passito. The 2020 low-yield vintage gives it unusual concentration: apricot and kumquat on the nose, a saline tension on the palate, and a long, herb-driven finish that reads more like the Mediterranean coast than any conventional white wine category.

Soki Soki is 100% Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria) sourced from multiple plots of 80-plus-year-old bush vines trained in the traditional alberello Pantesco style across several contradas of Pantelleria. The name refers directly to the soil: in Pantesco dialect, "soki soki" means soil rich in sand and pumice, the frothy volcanic rock that defines much of the island's terrain. Grapes from the different parcels are hand-harvested and vinified separately, with skin maceration lasting anywhere from one night to one week depending on ripeness and skin thickness. The lots are blended only at bottling.

The 2020 vintage saw low yields on Pantelleria, which brought added concentration and intensity to the wine. After maceration, the wine was aged on fine lees in a combination of six-year-old oak barrels and stainless steel. It was bottled with the addition of 15% "riserva perpetua" — a perpetual reserve blend started in 2017 — and a minimal 15 mg/L total SO2. Unfined and unfiltered.

On the nose: fragrant and almost medicinal, with Mediterranean herbs, orange zest, apricot, and green mango. The palate shows texture and tension in equal measure, with tropical fruit, kumquat, and fennel, anchored by a sandy, saline minerality. The finish is long and mouthwatering.

Classified as Terre Siciliane IGP. The wine is not eligible for the Pantelleria DOC dry white category, which is rarely used for low-intervention wines of this style.

Pair with grilled whole fish, shellfish with butter and herbs, or a plate of bottarga over pasta. The saline minerality and aromatic intensity also work well alongside aged sheep's milk cheese or dishes built around capers — Pantelleria's other famous product.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Tanca Nica

Tanca Nica was founded in 2015 by Francesco Ferreri, a Pantelleria native, and Nicoletta Pecorelli, originally from Sardinia. Francesco grew up working his grandfather's vines, left the island at 14 to study at the agricultural and oenological boarding school in Conegliano (Veneto), and later worked in oenology labs and wineries before joining the biodynamic estate Seresin in New Zealand. That experience shaped his approach. In 2016 he returned to Pantelleria to farm his grandfather's parcels and start Tanca Nica with Nicoletta.

The domaine farms roughly 3 hectares spread across multiple contradas on the island, with a total production of approximately 4,000 bottles per year. Vines are biodynamically farmed — biodynamic preparation 500 is applied, and fungal pressure is managed with copper and sulfur only when necessary. All vineyard work is done by hand using the alberello Pantesco system, which Francesco estimates requires 800 hours of labor per hectare per season. Yields average around 20 hl/ha in a normal year.

In the winery, grapes are destemmed and pressed by hand or foot. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts. For Soki Soki, parcels are vinified separately with varying maceration lengths based on the ripeness and skin thickness of each lot. Aging takes place on fine lees in old oak barrels and stainless steel. Wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal or no added sulfur depending on the cuvee — Soki Soki receives 15 mg/L total SO2 at bottling.

Wine region

Sicily / Pantelleria, Italy

Pantelleria is a volcanic island in the Strait of Sicily, approximately 100 kilometers southwest of Sicily and 60 kilometers from the Tunisian coast. Formed by undersea volcanic activity, its soils are entirely volcanic, composed primarily of pumice (soki soki) and lapilli — fragments of volcanic eruption. The island's climate is hot and arid, with only about 300mm of rainfall per year and constant Sirocco and Maestrale winds that shape every viticultural decision. Vineyards are carved into terraces on steep hillsides and range from sea level to over 300 meters altitude across multiple contradas.

The dominant grape of Pantelleria is Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria), historically grown for the island's famous Passito di Pantelleria and Moscato di Pantelleria DOC sweet wines. The traditional vine training system, alberello Pantesco — low-density gobelet vines planted inside circular basins called concas that collect winter rainfall — was granted UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status in 2014. A small number of producers are now making dry, low-intervention wines from Zibibbo, a style that remains rare. Pignatello and Catarratto are also present on the island in smaller quantities.
