Tasting notes

The old-vine Carignan from Calce gives this wine a peppery, fresh-fruited quality that is hard to find in Roussillon reds at this price. Carbonic maceration softens the grape's naturally firm tannins while keeping the wine's acidity bright and the fruit crunchy rather than stewed.

Soif de Plaisir is a 50/50 blend of Carignan from 80-year-old vines in Calce and Syrah from younger vines, grown across Marc and Caroline Barriot's 10-hectare estate in Roussillon. The grapes are fermented as whole clusters using carbonic maceration with indigenous yeasts, then aged on fine lees for 10 to 12 months in large old-wood foudres before bottling unfined and unfiltered. Total SO2 at bottling is low, recorded at 32 mg/L for the 2016 vintage. The wine is classified as Vin de France, a label Barriot applies across his entire range.

The Carignan vines in Calce sit on black schist and mica-schist soils, which are typical of the Agly Valley around Maury. These soils are poor, well-drained, and force vines to root deeply, concentrating flavor and preserving natural acidity. Old-vine Carignan in this environment produces fruit with structure and tension rather than weight.

The 2016 shows a deep ruby color with fresh pepper on both nose and palate, backed by ripe red and dark fruit and a hint of cocoa and licorice. Carignan's naturally high acidity keeps the wine lively, while the Syrah rounds out the mid-palate with dark berry fruit and spice. Tannins are moderate and smoothed by lees contact.

Pair with grilled lamb chops, merguez, or a slow-cooked beef daube where the wine's acidity and pepper can match fat and char. Works equally well with charcuterie, aged sheep's milk cheese, or a simple plate of grilled vegetables with herbes de Provence.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Le Clot de L'Origine

Marc and Caroline Barriot founded Le Clot de L'Origine in Maury in 2004. Barriot came to Roussillon from Bandol, where land prices made establishing an estate impractical, and he approached the region with the perspective of an outsider. The estate operates from a cellar in Maury, with vineyard plots spread across five villages: Calce, Maury, Estagel, Montner, and Latour de France, at altitudes between 120 and 450 meters. Total production averages 35,000 bottles per year across all cuvées.

Le Clot de L'Origine has been certified organic by ECOCert since 2009. Beyond organic certification, Barriot applies biodynamic principles, including horse plowing and the preparation of homemade herbal teas and plant extracts for vine treatments. All harvesting is done by hand. His stated goal is to keep alcohol levels lower than the regional average, and he works across a wide range of varieties including Carignan, Syrah, Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, Macabeo, Muscat, and Merlot.

All wines at Le Clot de L'Origine are fermented with indigenous yeasts and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Barriot uses minimal sulfur, with total SO2 levels kept low across the range. The Soif de Plaisir is fermented as whole clusters using carbonic maceration, then aged on fine lees in large old-wood foudres before bottling. The wine is classified as Vin de France, a designation Barriot applies to his entire lineup.

Wine region

Roussillon, France

Roussillon occupies the southernmost corner of France, bordered by the Pyrenees to the south and west, the Corbières hills to the north, and the Mediterranean to the east. The region forms a natural amphitheater facing the sea, cut by three rivers — the Agly, the Têt, and the Tech — that have carved through layers of metamorphic and sedimentary rock to create highly varied terroir. Vineyards sit between 100 and 450 meters elevation, with the Agly Valley around Maury and Calce defined by black schist soils that are poor, stony, and well-suited to old-vine Carignan, Grenache, and Syrah. The climate is hot and dry, moderated by the Tramontane wind, which limits disease pressure and allows organic and biodynamic farming.

Roussillon produces wines under multiple appellations: Côtes du Roussillon and Côtes du Roussillon Villages for dry reds, Maury Sec (recognized in 2011) for dry reds from the Agly Valley, and the broader IGP Côtes Catalanes, which covers the same territory with fewer restrictions. Producers who work outside appellation rules — as Marc Barriot does — label wines as Vin de France, which allows full flexibility in blending and viticulture. The region has historically been France's primary source of vin doux naturel (Maury, Banyuls, Rivesaltes), but a new generation of independent producers has built a reputation for mineral-driven, low-intervention dry wines.
