Tasting notes

The Giara comes from Cantina Indigeno's oldest vines and spends eight months on its lees in ceramic amphorae, which gives it a distinct earthy, slightly mineral quality alongside dark cherry and bramble fruit. It drinks with the juicy ease of a natural red but has enough structural backbone from the Teramo limestone soils to hold at the table.

Rosso Giara is made from 100% Montepulciano d'Abruzzo sourced from Cantina Indigeno's oldest vineyard, planted approximately 35 years ago in the hills around Montorio al Vomano, Teramo province. The vines grow on stony limestone soils at roughly 300 meters elevation, where the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea create a climate that swings between warm, dry summers and cool nights that preserve acidity in the fruit.

Grapes are harvested by hand and undergo a combination of whole-bunch skin contact and partial destemming with carbonic maceration for approximately two weeks in open vats. Fermentation is spontaneous, using only indigenous yeasts and no temperature control. After pressing, the wine ages for eight months on its lees in 800-liter Tuscan ceramic amphorae. It is bottled unfiltered, unfined, and with no added sulfites.

In the glass, the wine shows deep ruby with purple tints. The nose leads with dark berries, black cherry, red currant, and earthy undertones, with a faint bramble quality. The palate is juicy and medium-bodied, with light but present tannins, lively acidity, and a finish that carries hazelnut and a touch of tobacco.

Works well alongside arrosticini (Abruzzo lamb skewers), maccheroni alla chitarra with lamb ragu, or a simple plate of cured meats and aged pecorino. The wine's lively acidity also holds up to tomato-based pasta sauces and grilled pork sausages.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Indigeno

Cantina Indigeno was founded in 2016 by four friends: Alfredo Giugno, Nicola Reginaldi, Fabio Petrella, and Loreto Lamolinara, all based near Montorio al Vomano in the Teramo province of Abruzzo. Before the winery, Alfredo and Loreto ran a microbrewery they opened together in 2013, and Nicola was working as a sommelier. The transition from brewing to winemaking was influenced in part by their friendship with the Lammidia natural wine project, also based in Abruzzo. The first vintage was 2016, with initial production around 5,000 bottles, most sold to the United States and Japan.

The winery manages 9 hectares of organically certified vineyards in and around Teramo. Most vines are approximately 30 years old and grow on stony limestone soils. The team applies biodynamic preparations in the vineyard alongside organic farming. Their focus is on indigenous Abruzzo varieties, primarily Montepulciano and Trebbiano, with some work in Montonico and Pecorino. All harvesting is done by hand.

In the cellar, the approach is minimal intervention throughout. Fermentation is spontaneous using only indigenous yeasts, with no temperature control, no fining, no filtration, and no sulfur additions. Vessels vary by wine: fiberglass tanks, stainless steel, and ceramic amphorae are all used. The Giara Rosso specifically ages for eight months on its lees in 800-liter Tuscan ceramic amphorae before being bottled without any additions.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo sits on the Adriatic side of central Italy, bordered to the west by the Apennines, which include Corno Grande, the highest peak on the Italian mainland outside the Alps. The mountain range blocks westerly storms and, combined with Adriatic sea breezes to the east, produces strong diurnal temperature swings in the hill vineyards. This temperature variation is essential for preserving acidity in Montepulciano, which in warmer, flatter sites can become heavy and low in freshness. The province of Teramo in the north is widely regarded as producing the region's most concentrated and structured red wines, where the Apennines draw closer to the coast and soils shift to less fertile ferrous clay and limestone.

The key appellations are Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC (established 1968), Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC (the region's dry rosato from Montepulciano), and Colline Teramane Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOCG, elevated to the region's first DOCG in 2003 and covering vineyards in and around Teramo. Soils across the region are primarily clay-limestone, sometimes mixed with stony or sandy deposits. Cantina Indigeno's wines, made outside the DOC rules, are labeled as Abruzzo IGT.
