Tasting notes

Raboso del Piave is one of the most acidic red grapes in Italy, and at 60% of the blend it keeps this wine sharp, fresh, and food-ready. The 30-plus days of skin maceration and partial amphora aging add texture and a savory, almost mineral depth that makes it more serious than its modest label suggests.

Casa Belfi's Rosso delle Venezie is a still red wine from San Polo di Piave in the Province of Treviso, Veneto. It is a blend of Raboso del Piave (60%) with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc (40%), grown on 1.2 hectares of medium-textured, gravelly soils rich in sand and silt alongside the Piave River. The vineyards are trained in Guyot and Sylvoz and farmed organically and biodynamically, certified by both Suolo e Salute and Demeter. All vineyard and cellar work follows the Maria Thun biodynamic calendar.

Grapes are destemmed and macerated on the skins for at least 30 days with spontaneous fermentation using only native yeasts. The wine finishes fermentation partly in stainless steel and partly in terracotta amphorae, remaining in full tanks without racking to keep the lees in suspension. It spends winter in a tank outside the cellar, using ambient low temperatures to stabilize tartaric acid naturally before bottling. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfites.

On the nose it shows pomegranate, red currant, carob, and dark spice. The palate is full and structured with bright acidity and a balance of fruit and savory depth that reflects Raboso's naturally high acidity and the Cabernet varieties' structure. Annual production is approximately 4,000 bottles.

The Rosso delle Venezie IGT designation covers the three-regions zone of Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and Trentino-Alto Adige and allows free-proportion blending of approved red varieties, giving Donadi the flexibility to blend indigenous Raboso with Bordeaux varieties without restriction.

The high acidity and firm tannins of Raboso make this a reliable match for fatty cured meats like sopressata or mortadella, as well as braised duck and aged hard cheeses. It also holds up well to tomato-based pasta dishes and spiced sausages typical of the Veneto table.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Casa Belfi

Casa Belfi was founded in 1999 by winemaker Maurizio Donadi in collaboration with producer Albino Armani. Donadi trained in enology at Conegliano and Padova and worked as a consultant before returning to San Polo di Piave to farm family vineyards. The operation covers 10 hectares of vineyards split between San Polo and Romanziol di Noventa del Piave, with the still red wine sourced from a 1.2-hectare parcel with vines trained in Guyot and Sylvoz.

Donadi obtained organic certification in 2004 and Demeter biodynamic certification in 2016. The estate excludes all synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, applying organic matter through manure and green fertilization. All vineyard and cellar decisions follow the Maria Thun biodynamic calendar. The vineyards are also certified by Suolo e Salute.

In the cellar, Donadi works primarily with stainless steel tanks and terracotta amphorae with stainless steel closures. For the Rosso, grapes are destemmed and macerated on the skins for at least 30 days with spontaneous native yeast fermentation. The wine finishes partly in steel and partly in amphora, stays in full tanks without racking to maintain lees contact, and spends winter outdoors to stabilize tartaric acid at ambient temperatures. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfites.

Wine region

Veneto, Italy

Veneto is Italy's most productive wine region by volume, stretching from the Dolomites in the north to the Adriatic coast in the east. The Province of Treviso, where Casa Belfi is based, sits within the Marca Trevigiana along the Piave River in the northeastern corner of the region. The climate is moderate continental, with cold winters, warm summers, and significant diurnal temperature variation that preserves acidity in the grapes.

The soils around San Polo di Piave and Romanziol di Noventa del Piave are gravelly and medium-textured, rich in sand and silt and well-draining, deposited by the Piave River over millennia. The Treviso zone is best known internationally for Prosecco DOC and Col Fondo sparkling wines, but it is also home to Raboso del Piave, a high-acid, tannic indigenous red variety native to this alluvial plain. The Rosso delle Venezie IGT covers the full tri-regional zone of Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and Trentino-Alto Adige, permitting free-proportion blending of all approved regional red varieties.
