Tasting notes

This is a genuinely low-intervention Veneto red — cherry, raspberry, and blackberry on the nose with a peppery, slightly vegetal undercurrent from the Cabernet, and enough tannin grip to work with food. The 2-liter clear glass bottle is a practical format that also signals the estate's transparency-first philosophy: what you see is exactly what you get.

Costadilà's Rosso da Tavola is a field-blend red from approximately 30-year-old vineyards planted around Salgareda, in the Treviso plain southeast of the estate's main Prosecco holdings. The grapes are Merlot and Cabernet, grown on sedimentary alluvial soils — a flat, river-influenced terroir distinct from the moraine hills where the farm's sparkling wines originate. A portion of the fruit is allowed to over-ripen on the vine before harvest.

In the cellar, fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts. The wine undergoes a short maceration on the skins in stainless steel, then ages in steel before bottling. It is unfined, unfiltered, and contains no added sulfites — total sulfur measured at under 10 mg/L. The 2-liter format is the same clear glass bottle used across the Costadilà range, a deliberate choice that hides nothing about color or turbidity.

The result is a lively, ruby-red wine with fresh red fruit on the nose — cherry, raspberry, blackcurrant, blackberry — alongside vegetal and spicy undergrowth notes. On the palate it is fresh, juicy, and medium-bodied with lively tannins and good acidity. At 14% ABV it has more presence than the lighter-style NV bottlings the estate also produces.

Costadilà was founded in 2006 by the late Ernesto Cattel and partners in Tarzo, Treviso Province. After Cattel's death in 2018, the farm has been run by Alex della Vecchia and Martina Celi, both of whom worked with Cattel in the vines and cellar. The estate operates as a polyculture farm — vines, fruit, vegetables, cereals, and livestock on shared plots — farmed entirely without synthetic chemicals.

The producer recommends bread and salami or tagliatelle with a white ragù — both good calls for this juicy, food-friendly red. It also works well with grilled sausages, pizza bianca, or any roasted pork. A slight chill (60F) brings the acidity and fruit into sharper focus.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Costadilà

Costadilà — the name refers to a hamlet of Tarzo in the province of Treviso, roughly translated as 'the hillside over there' — was founded in 2006 by Ernesto Cattel and a group of partners including sommelier Mauro Lorenzon. Cattel, who described himself as a 'farmer-winemaker,' was a leading figure in the revival of col fondo Prosecco: naturally refermented-in-bottle sparkling wine made from Glera and other traditional Treviso varieties. He insisted on organic farming at a time when the dominant commercial Prosecco industry had moved heavily toward monoculture and synthetic inputs. Cattel passed away in the summer of 2018; the farm is now managed by Alex della Vecchia and Martina Celi, both of whom trained directly under Cattel.

The estate operates as a polyculture farm. Vines, fruit trees, vegetables, cereals, and livestock share the same plots of land, with farm produce sold into local businesses to complete the economic cycle. All vineyards are farmed organically, without synthetic pesticides or herbicides. The Prosecco vineyard parcels range from 280 to 450 meters above sea level in the hills around Vittorio Veneto, on chalky, clay-marl, and moraine soils. The red grape vineyards for Rosso da Tavola are located on the plains around Salgareda, on sedimentary alluvial soils, with vines averaging approximately 30 years of age.

Across all wines, fermentation is spontaneous using only indigenous yeasts. For the Rosso da Tavola, part of the fruit is left to over-ripen on the vine before harvest. After pressing, the wine undergoes a short maceration on the skins in stainless steel, then ages in steel prior to bottling. The wine is unfined, unfiltered, and bottled with no added sulfites; total sulfur is measured at under 10 mg/L. Costadilà's sparkling wines are made by the ancestral (col fondo) method — refermented in bottle with must from dried passito grapes — and are bottled in transparent glass across the range.

Wine region

Veneto, Italy

Veneto is Italy's highest-volume wine-producing region, stretching from the Dolomite foothills in the north to the Adriatic coast in the east. The province of Treviso sits in the northeastern portion of the region and is best known as the heartland of Prosecco di Conegliano e Valdobbiadene DOCG. The Treviso hills are shaped by glacial moraine deposits at elevation and alluvial sedimentary soils on the plains below, producing markedly different terroirs within a short distance. The climate is continental with alpine influence: warm summers, cool nights, and significant rainfall — cooler than Venice and susceptible to spring frost in lower-lying areas.

Costadilà's Prosecco vineyards sit in the hills at elevations between 280 and 450 meters above sea level, on calcareous and clay-marl soils. The Rosso da Tavola grapes, by contrast, come from the alluvial plains around Salgareda (TV), where sedimentary carryover soils from the Piave River system dominate. This is Marca Trevigiana IGT territory — a province-wide designation that permits red, white, and rosé wines from a broad range of varieties including the Bordeaux grapes Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which have been widely planted across the Veneto plains since the 19th century. Because Costadilà bottles the Rosso da Tavola as a Vino da Tavola, it carries no appellation designation.
