Tasting notes

Nerello Mascalese as a rosé is relatively uncommon, and this one from Alcamo shows the grape's natural affinity for bright red fruit and saline minerality without any skin contact heaviness. At 11.5% ABV and aged only in stainless steel, it stays fresh and precise — no oak, no fuss, nothing added beyond a trace of sulfur at bottling.

Rosato del Dottore 2019 is made from Nerello Mascalese grapes grown organically in northwestern Sicily under the Terre Siciliane IGT appellation. The wine is produced under the Azienda Agricola Siciliano label, a collaboration between Alessandro Viola and Rocco Siciliano. Viola is based in Alcamo, in the province of Trapani, where vineyards sit on clay soils at around 250 meters elevation in the valley near Pietra Rinosa, and on limestone and sand soils at 600 to 700 meters on the slopes of Mount Bonifato.

Grapes are harvested by hand in late September and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts at uncontrolled temperature, with no skin maceration. The wine ages for six months in stainless steel before bottling unfined and unfiltered, with only 20 mg/L of total sulfur dioxide added — well below the threshold considered zero-sulfite in natural wine circles.

The result is a dry, pale rosé with a fresh aromatic profile centered on red fruit and bright acidity. At 11.5% ABV, it sits at the lighter end of the rosé spectrum, making it straightforward to drink young and well-suited to warm-weather tables.

Pour alongside grilled swordfish, Sicilian-style couscous with seafood, or a plate of mixed antipasto. It also works well with linguine al pomodoro crudo or fresh ricotta on flatbread. The wine's bright acidity cuts through olive oil and salt-forward dishes cleanly.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Az. Agr. Siciliano

Azienda Agricola Siciliano is a collaboration between Rocco Siciliano and Alessandro Viola, producing wines under the Siciliano label distinct from Viola's own estate bottlings. Alessandro Viola grew up in Alcamo, where his father was a vine grower who made small quantities of wine for household use. After studying viticulture and oenology formally, Viola gained experience in Piedmont and on Mount Etna before returning to northwestern Sicily to focus on his family's land.

Viola farms approximately 7 hectares of vines across two distinct zones: valley plots near Pietra Rinosa and Santa Ninfa at around 250 meters on clay soils, and higher mountain plots on Mount Bonifato at 600 to 700 meters on a geological fault with sand on one side and limestone on the other. All vineyards are farmed organically without pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers. Cover crops of fava and clover are planted in winter for nitrogen fixation and soil health. Viola works between rows with disc mowers and plows by hand around vines once or twice per season.

In the cellar, Viola uses spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts across all wines. Red and rosé grapes are fully destemmed; white grapes are directly pressed. Wines are aged in a mix of stainless steel, old Marsala botti, and French oak depending on the cuvée. All wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Most cuvées receive little to no added sulfites, with the rosato style receiving approximately 20 mg/L of total SO2 at bottling.

Wine region

Sicily, Italy

Sicily is Italy's largest island, separated from the mainland by the Strait of Messina. The island spans approximately 25,700 square kilometers with vineyards planted from sea level to over 1,000 meters on the slopes of Mount Etna. Northwestern Sicily, where Alessandro Viola farms in the Alcamo area of the province of Trapani, is influenced by cool Mediterranean breezes off the Gulf of Castellammare and the Tyrrhenian Sea, which moderate summer heat and help preserve natural acidity in the grapes.

Soils in western Sicily vary between clay in valley floors around 250 meters elevation and limestone and sandy soils higher up on peaks like Mount Bonifato at 600 to 700 meters. Key appellations on the island include Etna DOC, Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG, Marsala DOC, and the flexible Terre Siciliane IGT, which allows producers to work with a wide range of grape varieties and styles. The IGT designation is widely used by natural producers who want to work outside strict DOC blend or varietal rules. Indigenous varieties dominate: Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese for reds, Catarratto and Grillo for whites.
