Tasting notes

Loureiro is built for high acidity and floral aromatics, and the two-day whole-cluster maceration here pulls out a saline, textural grip that you rarely get from this grape. The result is orange blossom and stone fruit up front, with a mineral, briny finish that makes it genuinely hard to put down.

Raiz Macerado is a 100% Loureiro skin-contact wine from Tiago Teles's granite-soiled vineyards at Quinta da Cancela in Arcos de Valdevez, within the Lima subregion of the Vinho Verde DOC. Arcos de Valdevez sits roughly 70km north of Porto near the River Vez, where the Atlantic climate brings high rainfall and cool temperatures that preserve Loureiro's signature acidity. The vines are hand-harvested in mid-September.

In the cellar, the whole-cluster grapes are not destemmed and spend approximately two days macerating before undergoing spontaneous fermentation in 1000-liter lagars with only indigenous yeasts for around 20 days. The wine then ages on fine lees for 10 months in 15-hectoliter raw concrete tanks. No fining, no filtration, no added enzymes or acidification.

Loureiro is an aromatic, high-acid variety whose name derives from the Portuguese word for laurel. In its conventional form it produces bright citrus and floral wines; extended skin contact here amplifies its textural weight, adds a saline grip, and deepens the aromatic register toward orange blossom, stone fruit, and a distinctive herbal edge. At 12.5% ABV it stays light on its feet despite the maceration.

Raiz Macerado is bottled under the Vinho de Portugal designation, unfined and unfiltered. It is produced with no additions beyond indigenous yeasts, following the low-intervention principles Teles has applied across all his labels since his first vintage in 2012.

A natural match for grilled sardines, salt cod dishes, or any seafood preparation where acidity and salinity are assets. Works equally well alongside fresh goat cheese, rabbit terrine, or vegetable-forward dishes with citrus-based sauces. Serve chilled at 46-50F in a white wine glass.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Tiago Teles

Tiago Teles trained as a telecommunications engineer and worked as a wine critic from 2002 to 2008, co-founding the wine website Os5às8 and co-authoring four editions of an annual wine guide as well as the Portal Portugal guide for 2008 and 2009. In 2012, he transitioned to winemaking, beginning with small hillside plots in São Mateus in the Bairrada region, where he and his father cultivated indigenous varieties including Baga and Alfrocheiro. This early work produced his first labels, Gilda and Maria da Graça.

In 2015, Teles expanded his sourcing to Arcos de Valdevez in the Vinho Verde region, rehabilitating an old granitic rural property at Quinta da Cancela. This site, where his mother was born and where he spent time as a child, is the source of grapes for the Raiz wines. He also works with vineyards in the Lisboa region. Across all three areas, his approach follows low-intervention organic principles: no added enzymes, no acidification, no fining, and no filtration.

In the cellar, Teles favors spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, whole-cluster or minimal-destemming maceration in 1000-liter lagars or cement tanks, and extended lees aging in raw concrete. He does not use new oak. The wines are produced without additions beyond native yeast populations present in the cellar and vineyard. Teles has described his position as a wine writer as directly informing his commitment to wines that express a specific place without intervention.

Wine region

Vinho Verde, Portugal

Vinho Verde is Portugal's largest demarcated wine region, stretching across the Minho district in the northwest between the Douro River to the south and the Minho River along the Spanish border to the north. The region's soils are predominantly granitic, shallow, and well-drained, with high natural acidity. The Atlantic Ocean drives the climate: cool temperatures, high rainfall often exceeding 1,200mm annually, and persistent humidity that requires careful canopy management. These conditions preserve acidity in the grapes and typically push alcohol levels low, often between 11 and 12.5% ABV.

Vinho Verde DOC is divided into nine official subregions. Tiago Teles sources Loureiro for Raiz Macerado from Arcos de Valdevez, which falls within the Lima subregion on the banks of the River Vez, approximately 30km from the Spanish border with Galicia. The Lima subregion is particularly recognized for Loureiro cultivation, and its granitic soils and Atlantic-influenced microclimate are well-suited to the variety's naturally high acidity and aromatic intensity. The region borders the Peneda-Gerês National Park to the east, Portugal's only national park.
