Tasting notes

The Venturi Vineyard Carignane delivers a structure and acidity you rarely get in California rosé, while the 5% skin-fermented Muscat from Contra Costa punches well above its volume with aromatic intensity. It is dry, taut, and genuinely food-friendly rather than fruit-bomb friendly.

  • Similar To: For fans of structured Provence rosé and Cru Beaujolais who want California old-vine character

This dry rosé is built around 85% direct-press old-vine Carignane from Venturi Vineyard in Calpella, near Ukiah in Mendocino County. The vines were planted in 1948, have been dry-farmed since inception, and grow in alluvial Pinole gravelly loam soils on the former Russian River riverbed. The farming is certified organic, managed by third-generation grower Larry Venturi.

The remaining 15% is a deliberate blend of two components: 10% old-vine, own-rooted, untreated Zinfandel from Lodi, and 5% skin-fermented Muscat from Contra Costa County. The Carignane provides the structural backbone and high natural acidity the variety is known for. The Zinfandel lightens the body and adds stone-fruit character. The skin-fermented Muscat contributes aromatic lift to the nose without adding sweetness.

Winemakers Shaunt Oungoulian and Diego Roig ferment with native yeasts, add no fining agents, and do not filter. Full malolactic fermentation rounds the texture while preserving freshness. Minimal sulfur is added before bottling only if needed, evaluated barrel by barrel.

The high acidity and dry finish make this a natural partner for dishes with fat or salt: herb-roasted chicken, grilled whole fish, charcuterie, or a simple bowl of pasta with olive oil and anchovy. It also holds up well alongside lightly spiced dishes where a fruit-forward rosé would clash.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Populis Wine

Populis Wine was founded in 2014 by Shaunt Oungoulian and Diego Roig, both UC Davis Viticulture and Enology graduates who staged with prominent natural wine producers in France before returning to California. Oungoulian apprenticed with Philippe Valette in Mâcon and Julie Balagny in Fleurie. Roig worked at Domaine Léon Barral in the Languedoc and COS in Sicily. The two operate their cellar in the East Bay and produce wines under two labels: Populis, built on purchased fruit from established growers across Northern California, and Les Lunes, which draws from vineyards they farm and lease directly in Sonoma and Napa.

For Populis, Oungoulian and Roig source exclusively from organically farmed vineyards, prioritizing old vines and multi-generational growers. A key long-term source is Venturi Vineyard in Calpella, Mendocino County, farmed by Larry Venturi, a third-generation grower whose family planted the site in 1948. The vines are head-trained, dry-farmed, and certified organic.

In the cellar, Populis wines are made with native yeasts and receive no additions beyond a small dose of sulfur before bottling, determined on a barrel-by-barrel basis. There is no fining and no filtration. The approach across both labels is to preserve the character of the individual vineyard sites without corrective winemaking.

Wine region

Mendocino County, United States

Mendocino County sits directly north of Sonoma County within California's North Coast AVA, roughly 130 miles north of San Francisco. The Mendocino Range divides the county into two distinct climate zones. The western side, including Anderson Valley, draws cool Pacific fog through river canyons and suits Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and aromatic whites. The eastern inland corridor around Ukiah and Redwood Valley is shielded from marine influence by the coastal mountains, producing a warmer, more continental climate rated Region III on the Winkler scale, with warm days well-suited to Carignane, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Mendocino County is the leading region for organic viticulture in California, with approximately 25% of its vineyard acreage certified organic, representing one-third of all certified organic vineyard acres in the state. The county has 13 designated AVAs as of 2024, including Anderson Valley, Redwood Valley, and McDowell Valley. Valley floor soils around Ukiah are predominantly deep alluvial loam deposited by the Russian River, shifting to gravelly Pinole loam near the riverbeds. Italian immigrants planted Zinfandel, Carignan, and Petite Sirah in the inland valleys beginning in the mid-1800s, and many of those vine blocks remain today as the old-vine sources prized by producers like Populis.
