Tasting notes

This wine is an unusual cross-regional blend that reads as aromatic and floral rather than conventionally red. The direct-pressed Alsatian Muscat Rouge and the whole-bunch Grolleau Gris pull the wine toward fresh red fruit and flowers, while the carbonic Cabernet keeps the structure whisper-light. Serve it with a slight chill and it drinks more like a serious rosé than anything else on the shelf.

Petal Rouge is a négociant blend born out of necessity: in 2019, Lisanne van Son of Sonshine Vins had no access to Gamay, so she sourced organic fruit from three growers across Anjou, Alsace, and Montlouis-sur-Loire to create this cuvée. The three grapes each received distinct treatment before blending: 60% Grolleau Gris from grower Toby Bainbridge in Anjou underwent whole-bunch maceration for 6 days; 30% Muscat Rouge from Luc Faller in Alsace was pressed directly; 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from Domaine Croix Mellier in Montlouis-sur-Loire spent 3 weeks in carbonic maceration. All grapes were hand-harvested. The lots were vinified separately, blended once fermentation was complete, and aged in tank. The wine was produced in a troglodyte cave in Noizay, Touraine.

Grolleau Gris is a gray-skinned mutation of Grolleau Noir, native to the Loire and historically grown in Anjou and Touraine. It contributes low alcohol, lively acidity, and delicate red fruit character. Muscat Rouge, a local red Muscat variety in Alsace, adds floral and aromatic lift. The small addition of carbonic-macerated Cabernet Sauvignon rounds out the blend with soft tannin and dark fruit. The result is a light-to-medium-bodied red with a distinctly aromatic, fresh profile.

Sonshine Vins sources only organically or biodynamically grown fruit. Wines are fermented with indigenous yeast, with no additions during vinification. A minimal dose of sulfur may be added before bottling if the wine requires it for stability. The 2019 Petal is unfined and unfiltered.

The wine's light body and bright acidity make it a natural match for charcuterie, rillettes, or a simple board of Loire valley goat cheese. It also works well alongside grilled salmon or trout, where a heavier red would overwhelm. Slightly chilled, it pairs cleanly with roasted chicken or vegetable tarts.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Sonshine Vins

Lisanne van Son is a Dutch-born sommelier who spent roughly a decade working in hotels and restaurants in the Netherlands, Belgium, and the United Kingdom before deciding to make wine herself. In 2013 she spent time at Domaine Noella Morantin in Montlouis-sur-Loire, which she credits with drawing her into winemaking. In March 2017 she relocated to Touraine, enrolled in winemaking studies in Amboise, and began producing small quantities of wine. After completing her diploma, she established Sonshine Vins as a négociant, operating out of a troglodyte cave in Noizay, near Amboise.

As a négociant, Sonshine Vins does not own the vineyards supplying its grapes. Lisanne sources exclusively from growers farming organically or biodynamically, and participates in harvest alongside the farmers. The 2019 Petal draws from three growers: Toby Bainbridge in Anjou (Grolleau Gris), Luc Faller in Alsace (Muscat Rouge), and Domaine Croix Mellier in Montlouis-sur-Loire (Cabernet Sauvignon). Since 2021, Lisanne and her partner Edouard Gouyette have also operated Domaine des Sonnettes, a 4-hectare estate in Jujurieux in the Bugey region, where the Sonshine wines are now produced.

All Sonshine wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts and receive no additions during vinification. Minimal sulfur may be added before bottling if the wine needs it for transport stability. The wines are not fined or filtered. For the Petal Rouge 2019, each grape component was vinified separately: Grolleau Gris as a whole-bunch red maceration for 6 days, Muscat Rouge by direct press, and Cabernet Sauvignon by carbonic maceration for 3 weeks. The finished lots were blended and aged in tank before bottling.

Wine region

Loire Valley, France

The Loire Valley stretches roughly 1,000 kilometers across central France, running from the Massif Central to the Atlantic coast. The section relevant to this wine spans three distinct sub-regions: Anjou in the west, Touraine in the center, and Alsace in the northeast of France (outside the Loire proper). Anjou's soils are primarily Precambrian and primary schists, sandstones, and volcanic rocks from the Armorican Massif. These warm, low-calcium soils are well-suited to Grolleau. The Touraine area around Noizay and Vouvray sits on tuffeau limestone, a soft chalky rock that gave rise to the region's famous troglodyte caves, which provide naturally stable temperatures for vinification and aging. Loire Valley climate is temperate Atlantic, with cool winters, moderate summers, and significant vintage variation.

Anjou and Touraine are the heartland for Grolleau and Grolleau Gris, with the variety planted between Tours and Angers. As a négociant, Sonshine Vins blends across appellations, and the 2019 Petal is labeled as Vin de France, which allows for the multi-regional, multi-appellation sourcing used here. Key appellations in the broader Loire include Anjou, Touraine, Vouvray, Montlouis-sur-Loire, and Saumur. The Loire is best known for Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadet, but a growing group of natural producers are working with indigenous varieties like Grolleau, Pineau d'Aunis, and Menu Pineau.
