Tasting notes

This is not a pale, delicate rosé. Montepulciano's thick, highly pigmented skins give Onda Anomala a deep pink color, a slightly textural mouthfeel, and flavors of blackcurrant and pomegranate that push it closer to a light red than a conventional rosato. The absence of any added sulfites keeps the fruit vivid and the finish clean.

Onda Anomala is a direct-press rosato from Controvento, made from 100% Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Grapes come from organically farmed vineyards in Rocca San Giovanni, Province of Chieti, planted between 1998 and 2001 on clayey and calcareous soils, situated within the Fosso delle Farfalle, a protected site of community interest (SIC) roughly 1 km from the Adriatic coast. The vineyards sit at approximately 150 meters above sea level and face the sea.

After harvest, the grapes are direct-pressed into stainless steel tanks and fermented using only indigenous yeasts. The wine ages for a few months in the same steel tanks. No fining, no filtration, and no sulfites are added at any stage. Total SO2 remains below 10 mg/L.

The result is a deep, bright pink wine with an intense aromatic profile. On the nose it shows blackcurrant, strawberry, and pomegranate, followed by wild herb and Mediterranean scrub notes. The palate is smooth and textural with good freshness, light tannin grip from Montepulciano's highly pigmented skins, and an extended finish.

Serve alongside grilled Adriatic fish, cuttlefish with peas, or brodetto vastese (Abruzzese fish stew). It has enough texture and acidity to hold up to lamb chops, grilled sausage, or pasta alla chitarra with a lamb ragu. Aged pecorino or local cured meats work well as an aperitivo pairing.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Controvento

Controvento is the project of Vincenzo Di Meo, based in Rocca San Giovanni in the Province of Chieti, Abruzzo. The Di Meo family originates from Bacoli, in Campania. Vincenzo's grandfather had a small farm in Ortona in the 1950s for table grapes, but sold it in 1968. In 1978, Vincenzo's father returned to Abruzzo and purchased approximately two hectares of land in Rocca San Giovanni, planting the estate's first vines. The property has grown over the years to just over 5 hectares.

The vineyards sit within the Fosso delle Farfalle, a protected site of community interest (SIC) in the municipality of Rocca San Giovanni where permanent hunting is prohibited. The estate is approximately 1 km from the Adriatic Sea. Vines are planted on clayey and calcareous soils and were established between 1998 and 2001, with a newer section of roughly one hectare added more recently. The primary varieties are Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Trebbiano, with smaller plantings of Fiano, Passerina, Malvasia, Mantonico, and Cabernet. No chemicals are used in the vineyard; the vines are fertilized with winter green manure and farmed organically.

In the cellar, Vincenzo follows a strict non-interventionist approach. All fermentations are spontaneous with only indigenous yeasts. Wines are aged in stainless steel, then bottled without fining, clarification, or filtration. No sulfites are added at any stage, with total SO2 measuring below 10 mg/L across the range.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo sits along central Italy's Adriatic coast, flanked to the west by the Apennine Mountains. Vineyards in the coastal strip of the Chieti province, where Rocca San Giovanni is located, sit at relatively low elevations near the sea and benefit from a Mediterranean climate moderated by both Adriatic sea breezes and cooler mountain air moving in from the west. The dual influence extends the growing season, helping Montepulciano reach full phenolic maturity without sacrificing acidity.

Abruzzo is defined by two principal grape varieties: the red Montepulciano and the white Trebbiano d'Abruzzo. Montepulciano is the basis for the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC as well as the Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC, the region's distinctive rosato appellation established in 2010 as the first dedicated pink DOC in Italy. Cerasuolo requires a minimum of 85% Montepulciano and is made by direct press or brief skin contact, resulting in wines with deep cherry-pink color and more structure than typical Provencal rosé. The soils throughout the coastal zone are predominantly clay and limestone, contributing to the wine's characteristic mineral streak and textural presence.
