The Wine: Oh-Mah Mondeuse 2018
Iruai Oh-Mah Mondeuse is a red natural wine made from 100% grape varietal Mondeuse grown in Northern California. Mondeuse is a rare and ancient varietal originally from Savoie, France. The wine is made naturally with minimal intervention, unfiltered, unfined, low-sulfites. Winemaker Chad Hinds best describes it: "With a bouquet of trampled earth, leather, and wild berries, it's easy to see why Mondeuse is the interdimensional Bigfoot's wine of choice. Think of it as Syrah on the rocks. Crunchy and fresh blue fruit, with a kick of black pepper and meat fresh off the campfire. When you tell people about it, they won't believe you, so make sure you buy an extra bottle." That sounds pretty damn convincing to me!
The Producer: Iruai • Methode Sauvage
Methode Sauvage was started in 2013 by Chad Hinds. We began, striving to find a voice for California Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc from all over the state. In the Spring of 2018, we will begin planting a vineyard in the California Alps of Siskiyou County, using the permaculture methods laid out by Masanobu Fukuoka. In the spirit of this new project, we have begun experimenting with wine styles and varietals from the Alps of Europe.
We seek to make wine with a sense of place by employing no additives and removing no character. We explore a diverse array of exceptional vineyard sites, with the goal of channeling terroir and showcasing California's diversity.
