Tasting notes

Three weeks of Vermentino skin contact in Grenache Blanc juice gives Nespola a distinctive amber hue, gentle tannin structure, and flavors of white peach, orange zest, and almond with a briny mineral finish. It drinks like a serious orange wine but with the easy, unforced energy that this project is built around.

Nespola is a skin-contact white made from Vermentino and Grenache Blanc grown organically in the Collioure zone of Roussillon, in the far southeastern corner of France near the Spanish border. The wine is declassified to Vin de France rather than bottled under the Collioure AOC. Vermentino whole bunches are macerated in the fermenting juice of Grenache Blanc for approximately three weeks, then pressed and transferred to concrete vats to rest before bottling unfined and unfiltered with little to no added sulfur.

The grapes come from vineyards in and around Banyuls-sur-Mer, planted over decomposed schist, quartz, and sand. These soils, combined with the Mediterranean heat and the dry Tramontane wind that blows roughly one day in three, produce concentrated fruit with naturally high acidity. The result in the glass is a hazy amber-gold wine with soft tannin grip from the skin contact, and a mineral, slightly briny character that reflects the proximity to the sea.

Tutti Frutti Ananas is a collaborative négociant project helmed by Manuel di Vecchi Staraz of Vinyer de la Ruca, Zé Tafé of La Cave des Nomades, and Joachim Roque of Domaine Carterole, all based in Banyuls-sur-Mer. They vinify at Les 9 Caves, a shared cooperative cellar in the center of town. Fermentation is spontaneous, and the wines are bottled young with no fining or filtration. Whether sulfur was used or not is stated clearly on the label.

The skin tannin and saline minerality make this a natural match for dishes with some fat or umami weight: saffron and mushroom risotto, grilled oily fish like sardines or mackerel, aged sheep's milk cheese, or a simple charcuterie plate with cured meats and olives. Serve lightly chilled, around 52-54F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Tutti Frutti Ananas

Tutti Frutti Ananas is a négociant project based in Banyuls-sur-Mer, initiated by three winemakers who each produce highly limited estate wines under their own labels: Manuel di Vecchi Staraz of Vinyer de la Ruca (Italian), Zé Tafé of La Cave des Nomades (Portuguese), and Joachim Roque of Domaine Carterole (French-Catalan). The project began when Joachim retrieved an additional eight hectares of vines from the local cooperative and proposed a shared venture rather than returning the fruit to the coop. The name reflects their three nationalities: the wines are each named after a fruit in Italian, Portuguese, or Catalan.

Fruit comes mainly from the Saint-André sector and other parcels around Banyuls-sur-Mer, farmed organically over decomposed schist, quartz, and sand. Unlike the steep terraced vineyards the trio works for their estate labels, these parcels are on slightly less extreme slopes that allow some mechanical work and yield a bit more fruit per hectare. Manuel di Vecchi Staraz handles the vinifications for all Tutti Frutti Ananas wines.

All wines are fermented spontaneously with native yeasts at Les 9 Caves, a shared cooperative cellar the group operates in an old garage in the center of Banyuls-sur-Mer. Fermentation and aging take place in concrete vats. The wines are bottled young, unfiltered, and unfined with little to no added sulfur. Each label states clearly whether SO2 was used and at what level.

Wine region

Roussillon, France

Roussillon sits in the far southeastern corner of France, wedged between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean coast, bordered by Spain to the south. The Collioure AOC covers four coastal communes: Collioure, Port-Vendres, Banyuls-sur-Mer, and Cerbère, with vineyards climbing terraced hillsides up to 400 meters in altitude. Soils are predominantly brown Cambrian schist, with pockets of quartz, sand, and alluvial material closer to the sea. The dry, hot Mediterranean summers are tempered by the Tramontane, a dry northwesterly wind that keeps disease pressure low and concentrates flavors in the fruit.

The Collioure AOC shares identical geographic boundaries with the Banyuls AOC, its fortified wine counterpart. Red wines under Collioure are built primarily from Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre, Syrah, and Carignan; whites from Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris. The steep terraced vineyards, known locally as feixas, require fully manual viticulture. Yields are among the lowest in France, often under 20 hl/ha on the steepest schist slopes. Many producers in this zone are farming organically, and Roussillon as a whole is one of France's most organically farmed wine regions.
