Tasting notes

Raboso is one of Italy's most uncompromising grapes — high acid, firm tannin, deep color — and the col fondo method here softens the edges without taming the character. Plum, raspberry, licorice, and black pepper come through the fine mousse with a dry, chalky, pleasantly bitter finish that makes this far more interesting than any industrial Prosecco at this price.

Casa Belfi is a project run by winemaker Maurizio Donadi and producer Albino Armani from their estate in San Polo di Piave, in the Marca Trevigiana (province of Treviso). The Naturalmente Frizzante Rosso is made from 100% Raboso grown on 1.5 hectares of medium-textured, pebble-rich, well-draining alluvial soils along the Piave plain. Vines are trained using Guyot and Sylvoz systems, farmed organically and biodynamically with certification from both Suolo e Salute and Demeter. All vineyard and cellar work follows the Maria Thun biodynamic calendar.

Winemaking is built around the col fondo method, a traditional technique of in-bottle refermentation without disgorgement. After hand-harvesting, whole clusters undergo carbonic maceration for approximately one month, followed by destemming and continued skin maceration for around 15 days with native yeasts. The wine is then racked into stainless steel tanks with regular battonage to keep yeasts in suspension. In spring, rising ambient temperatures re-activate the residual yeasts in bottle, completing fermentation and producing natural carbonation. The wine is bottled with its lees, unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfites (total SO2 under 15 mg/L).

The result is a lively, slightly cloudy purple-red wine with a fine, soft mousse. Aromas of plum, raspberry, and rhubarb lead into notes of licorice and black pepper. On the palate it is dry and fresh with balanced tannins and a pleasantly bitter finish — characteristic of Raboso, a late-ripening, thick-skinned grape native to the eastern Veneto that historically carried the nickname rabbioso (angry) for its bold acidity and grip. At 10.5% ABV it is light in body and built for drinking, not cellaring.

Serve well-chilled at 50-54°F. Gently invert the bottle before pouring to incorporate the lees, or pour carefully and save the last cloudy pour for a richer, yeastier glass.

A natural with charcuterie, salami, and cured pork — the acidity cuts through fat cleanly. Works well alongside pasta with tomato-based sauces or pizza. Also try it with fresh goat cheese or mild soft cheeses, following the traditional Venetian pairing.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Casa Belfi

Casa Belfi is a collaboration between winemaker Maurizio Donadi and producer Albino Armani. The project is based in San Polo di Piave in the province of Treviso. Donadi is personally responsible for all vineyard and cellar work; no grapes are purchased from outside growers. Albino Armani handles commercial distribution through his existing network. The partnership combines Donadi's focus on natural, minimal-intervention winemaking with Armani's interest in preserving indigenous Veneto grape varieties.

The Casa Belfi vineyards are certified organic and biodynamic by both Suolo e Salute and Demeter. All farming and cellar operations follow the Maria Thun biodynamic calendar. Soil fertility is maintained through composted manure and green cover crops. No synthetic chemicals, herbicides, or pesticides are used. Donadi works with Guyot and Sylvoz vine training systems across the estate's holdings in the Treviso plain.

In the cellar, Donadi works primarily in stainless steel and experiments with terracotta amphorae in some cuvees. Fermentation is entirely spontaneous with native yeasts. The Frizzante Rosso uses the col fondo method: whole-cluster carbonic maceration followed by extended skin contact, battonage in tank, and in-bottle refermentation in spring using residual sugars and ambient temperatures. The wines are never fined or filtered and are bottled with zero or near-zero added sulfites.

Wine region

Veneto, Italy

Veneto is located in northeastern Italy and is one of the country's largest wine-producing regions by volume. It stretches from the Dolomites in the north to the Adriatic coast in the east, encompassing a wide range of climates and soils. The eastern plains around the Piave River — within the province of Treviso — have a moderate continental climate with warm summers, cool autumns, and alluvial soils composed of clay, gravel, and pebbles deposited by the river. This is the heartland of Raboso and, further north toward Valdobbiadene and Conegliano, of Glera and Prosecco production.

Veneto holds numerous DOC and DOCG appellations, including Prosecco DOC, Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG, Soave DOC, and Piave DOC. The Piave DOC covers both white and red wines along the Piave River plain, with Raboso Piave as its signature red grape. Casa Belfi's Frizzante Rosso falls under the broader Delle Venezie IGT, which allows greater flexibility in winemaking and grape sourcing across Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
