Tasting notes

Muscat of Alexandria rarely appears in a bone-dry, zero-dosage sparkling format this precise — orange blossom and lychee aromatics cut through by genuine mineral salinity from the limestone-fossil soils of Garraf. Twenty-four months on lees adds a subtle brioche texture without softening the wine's drive. It is about as far from sweet Moscato as the grape can go.

The Núria is a sparkling white wine made from 100% Muscat of Alexandria grown at the Clos Lentiscus estate in Sant Pere de Ribes, within the Garraf subzone of Penedès DO. The vines sit at roughly 225 meters above sea level on shallow, calcareous sandy soils studded with marine fossils, facing south toward the Mediterranean Sea. The wine is named after Núria Aviñó, daughter of Manel Aviñó, who works the estate alongside him.

After direct pressing, the first fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in 55-litre demijohns. The wine then undergoes a second fermentation in bottle, triggered using a starter made from honey sourced from the estate's own beehives combined with reserved grape must. The wine ages on fine lees for 24 months before manual disgorging. Residual sugar is under 2 g/L, placing this firmly in the brut/extra-brut range despite Muscat's inherently aromatic character.

No sulfites are added at any stage; total SO2 is 10 mg/L. The wine is unfined and unfiltered. The estate is certified organic by CCPAE and practices biodynamic farming including lunar-cycle scheduling for pruning, harvesting, and bottling. No pesticides or herbicides are used. The vineyard is plowed with a horse named Ringo, and sheep graze the estate to manage weeds naturally.

Muscat of Alexandria produces aromatic wines dominated by orange blossom, lychee, apricot, and fresh grape character. In this bone-dry, low-sulfite sparkling format, those aromatics stay lifted and precise, kept in check by the extended lees contact and the natural acidity of the Garraf terroir.

The dry, aromatic character works well with grilled white fish, briny shellfish like oysters or clams, and mildly spiced dishes where the wine's perfume complements rather than clashes. Fresh goat cheese or a light sheep's milk cheese from Catalunya also pairs well. Avoid rich, cream-heavy preparations that will flatten the wine's acidity.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Producer profile

Clos Lentiscus

Clos Lentiscus is the estate of Manel Aviñó and his daughter Núria Aviñó, located in Sant Pere de Ribes near Sitges in the Garraf subzone of Penedès. The family farmhouse, Can Ramon, dates to the 14th century and was historically tied to wine commerce with France and the Spanish colonies. The estate declined during the 19th and 20th centuries due to phylloxera, the Spanish Civil War, and industrialization. After their father's death, Manel and his brother Joan returned to Can Ramon around 2001-2002 and restarted winemaking, with the aim of reviving the estate's historical identity using native grape varieties and minimal-intervention techniques.

The 20-hectare estate is certified organic by CCPAE and follows biodynamic practices certified by Demeter. No pesticides or herbicides are used. Planting, pruning, harvesting, and bottling are scheduled around the lunar calendar. The vineyard is plowed with a horse named Ringo; sheep graze the property to fertilize the soil and control weeds naturally; and beehives support pollination across the estate. Native grape varieties grown include Muscat of Alexandria, Xarel-lo, Malvasia de Sitges, Sumoll, Parellada, Cartoixà Vermell, Carignan, and Ull de Llebre, all on calcareous sandy soils at roughly 225 meters above sea level.

In the cellar, Manel interferes as little as possible. All fermentations use indigenous yeasts. For sparkling wines, the secondary fermentation starter is made from honey harvested from the estate's own bees combined with reserved grape must from the first press. No sulfites are added to any wine in the range; Manel removed sulfites from his winemaking entirely after his wife was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Wines are unfined and unfiltered. The Núria range of sparkling wines undergoes 24 months of aging on fine lees before manual disgorging.

Wine region

Catalunya, Spain

Penedès DO sits between the Garraf Massif coastal hills and the Mediterranean Sea, southwest of Barcelona in Catalunya, Spain. The appellation is divided into three subzones: Baix Penedès along the lower, warmer coast; Penedès Central, the main production heartland; and Alt Penedès, which reaches elevations of 500 to 800 meters and produces the freshest white wine styles. Clos Lentiscus sits within the Garraf subzone, the coastal zone framed by a natural park, at approximately 225 meters above sea level. Soils here are shallow, calcareous, and sandy, with a high concentration of marine fossils — a legacy of the area's geological history. The Mediterranean climate brings warm, dry summers and mild winters, with moderate rainfall concentrated in spring and autumn and low humidity that naturally reduces fungal pressure in the vineyards.

Penedès is best known internationally as the home of Cava, Spain's traditional-method sparkling wine, with approximately 95% of all Cava produced in the region. The DO also covers dry still red, white, and rosé wines across all three color categories. Key indigenous white grape varieties include Xarel-lo, Macabeu, Parellada, Malvasia de Sitges, and Muscat of Alexandria, while Sumoll, Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo), Carinyena, and Garnatxa are the principal reds. As of the 2025 harvest, Penedès became the world's first 100% certified organic wine appellation, with all 5,000 hectares under the DO now farmed without synthetic pesticides or herbicides.
