Tasting notes

Prugnolo Gentile at this extraction level delivers tart cherry, red currant, and a dried-herb edge without the grip you get from Vino Nobile. The no-punch-down Etruscan fermentation keeps things lifted and earthy rather than extracted — it drinks more like a serious natural Gamay than a Sangiovese clone.

  • Style: Dry, light-bodied red; tart cherry and dried herb; high acidity; 13% ABV; no added SO2
  • Grapes & Terroir: 100% Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese clone); no chemicals, ground cover; sandy and tufaceous soils; 280-300m elevation; Tuscany-Umbria border
  • Winemaking: Spontaneous native yeast fermentation; Etruscan method (floating cap, no punch-downs); 7-10 days skin contact; 6-8 months in stainless steel; unfined, unfiltered, no added SO2
  • Serving: Serve at 58-62F; no decant needed; slight chill enhances freshness
  • Pairing: Charcuterie, tomato pasta, roasted chicken, aged pecorino, pizza
  • Similar To: For fans of light Sangiovese, natural Gamay, or Rosso di Montepulciano who want a no-frills, no-sulfur everyday red

Murato is made from 100% Prugnolo Gentile, the Sangiovese clone native to the area around Montepulciano in southern Tuscany. I Cangianti's 2.5-hectare Prugnolo vineyard sits at 280-300 meters elevation on sandy and tufaceous soils, with vines around 20 years old trained to spurred cordon. The wine is classified as Vino Rosso, carrying no DOC appellation, which gives the brothers latitude to farm and vinify without bureaucratic constraint.

Fermentation follows what I Cangianti call the Etruscan method: the grape cap is left floating on the surface without punch-downs, and fermentation proceeds spontaneously with native yeasts at uncontrolled temperature. Skin contact runs 7-10 days. The wine then ages 6-8 months in stainless steel before bottling unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfur dioxide.

The result lands somewhere between a Rosso di Montepulciano and a vin de soif: bright red fruit, high acidity, and soft tannins from the gentle extraction. Prugnolo Gentile carries the structural backbone of Sangiovese — cherry, dried herb, and earthy undertones — but the no-intervention winemaking keeps the wine light and immediate rather than built for cellaring.

Works well with charcuterie, simple pasta with tomato-based sauces, and roasted chicken. The high acidity and light body make it a natural match for dishes with olive oil, fresh herbs, and moderate fat. Serve slightly chilled at around 58-60F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

I Cangianti

I Cangianti by Stoppini was founded in 2019 by brothers Luca and Matteo Stoppini. The project grew out of family ties to the land on the Tuscany-Umbria border and prior experience across wine production, tasting, and marketing. The name references a place on the border between the two regions.

Farming is done without synthetic chemicals, with ground cover maintained between vine rows. The Prugnolo Gentile block covers 2.5 hectares with vines around 20 years old, trained to spurred cordon. A separate 1-hectare Gamay del Trasimeno plot at 250 meters on clay and silt soils feeds their Promiscuo blend. No certifications are listed, but no chemical inputs are used across the estate.

Winemaking across the range relies on spontaneous fermentation with no temperature control and no additions. For Murato, the Etruscan method is applied: the grape cap floats without punch-downs during 7-10 days of skin contact. Wines are aged in stainless steel for 6-8 months, then bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfur dioxide. Annual production of Murato is approximately 32,000 bottles.

Wine region

Tuscany/Umbria, Italy

I Cangianti's vineyards straddle the administrative border between southern Tuscany and northern Umbria. The Prugnolo Gentile vines are planted near Montepulciano in the province of Siena, at 280-300 meters elevation on sandy and tufaceous soils. The cellar sits on the Umbrian side near Corciano, in the hills above Perugia. The border location places the project within reach of both the Colli del Trasimeno DOC (home to Gamay del Trasimeno, a Grenache biotype) and the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG zone, though Murato carries neither appellation.

Umbria holds 2 DOCGs and 13 DOCs, with Sangiovese accounting for roughly 22% of plantings across the region. Montepulciano's vineyards in Tuscany range from 250 to 600 meters, with soils that include clay, sand, and limestone. The Colli del Trasimeno DOC in Umbria, just northwest of Perugia along Lake Trasimeno, covers approximately 222 hectares and is the only Italian zone where Gamay del Trasimeno — genetically confirmed as Grenache — is cultivated as a primary variety. The two zones together define the grape and cultural identity of I Cangianti's portfolio.
