Tasting notes

Miro shows what Primitivo looks like when grown at altitude on limestone rather than on the hot coastal plains: tart blackberry, brambly red fruit, and a mineral, lightly saline finish at just 12.5% ABV. Four days on skins keeps it fresh and crunchy rather than extracted or heavy, making it one of the most food-friendly expressions of this grape you will find.

Miro is Cristiano Guttarolo's entry-level Primitivo, sourced from the youngest vines on his estate outside Gioia del Colle in Puglia. First produced in 2015, it is 100% Primitivo grown on the Murge Plateau at roughly 400 meters above sea level on thin, red-ferrous topsoils over karstic limestone. The elevation and constant Adriatic breezes keep this part of Puglia significantly cooler than the coastal plains, which shows clearly in the glass.

The grapes are hand-harvested and spend just 4 days on skins before fermentation and aging take place entirely in stainless steel. Fermentation is spontaneous using indigenous yeasts, and the wine is bottled without fining, filtration, or added sulfur. This light-handed approach preserves the natural energy of young-vine Primitivo rather than extracting weight and concentration.

What results is a Primitivo that reads more like a Beaujolais than anything from Manduria: tart red and dark fruit, a snappy mineral edge from the limestone, and a faint saline quality on the finish. Licorice and herbal notes emerge in the back. It is a wine built for the table, not the cellar.

Built for tomato-based pasta dishes: spaghetti al pomodoro, pasta al forno, or orecchiette con cime di rapa. It also works well with pizza, pork sausage, and simple grilled vegetables. Serve slightly cool, around 60F, to keep the acidity lively.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cristiano Guttarolo

Cristiano Guttarolo founded Cantine Cristiano Guttarolo in 2004, starting with 2.2 hectares of vineyard inherited from his grandfather outside Gioia del Colle. The estate has grown to 7 hectares and operates out of a converted masseria built entirely from local stone, where the old stables now serve as the winery. The estate is certified organic by Ecocert.

Guttarolo farms without synthetic chemicals or fertilizers, favoring cover crops to maintain biodiversity and soil health. Vines are trained using the Guyot method. He tills the soil sparingly and allows wild herbs and flowers to grow through much of the year. The estate's vineyards sit on the Murge Plateau at around 400 meters above sea level on clay-limestone karst soils cooled by Adriatic breezes.

In the cellar, all fermentations are spontaneous using indigenous yeasts. Skin contact duration varies by wine: Miro spends 4 days on skins in stainless steel, while the estate's other wines see longer macerations of 14 to 18 days in steel or up to 150 days in amphora. No fining, filtration, or sulfur additions are used at any stage.

Wine region

Puglia, Italy

Gioia del Colle sits on the Murge Plateau in central Puglia at approximately 360 to 430 meters above sea level, positioned midway between the Adriatic and Ionian seas. The elevation is unusually high for Puglia, and the constant sea breezes from both coasts keep daytime temperatures significantly cooler than the coastal plains. Diurnal temperature swings at harvest can reach 20 degrees Celsius, slowing ripening and preserving natural acidity in the grapes.

The defining soil of the Murge Plateau is karstic limestone with thin layers of red, iron-rich topsoil. This combination restrains vine vigor and imparts a tangy mineral quality to the wines. Gioia del Colle DOC was established in 1987 and is the historical cradle of Primitivo, where an 18th-century priest named Francesco Filippo Indelicati first selected and named the grape for its early ripening. Primitivo wines from this DOC must be 100% Primitivo with a minimum of 13% ABV under DOC rules, though producers like Guttarolo bottle under the broader Puglia IGP designation to allow more flexibility.
