Tasting notes

The Syrah-Muscat d'Alexandrie combination is genuinely unusual — the savory, peppery grip of the Syrah is cut through by the lychee and floral aromatics of the Muscat, giving the wine both structure and fragrance in the same sip. At a production of around 300 bottles, this 2019 is a snapshot of FX's early work during the most dramatic heat year the eastern Roussillon had seen.

Margot is a pale red rosé from François-Xavier Dauré (FX) of Domaine Lampyres, made from roughly two-thirds Syrah and one-third Muscat d'Alexandrie grown organically in and around the village of Espira-de-l'Agly in the Agly Valley of Roussillon. The wine is labeled Vin de France. FX named the cuvée for his daughter Margot, who was born during the 2018 harvest. Production is tiny — only around 300 bottles were made in the first vintage.

2019 was FX's final vintage working at Domaine Matassa alongside New Zealander Tom Lubbe. It was a punishing year in the eastern Roussillon: temperatures spiked to 118°F (48°C) at the end of June, causing sunburn that destroyed more than half of the potential crop. The wines that survived the vintage are concentrated and structured by the heat stress rather than diminished by it.

In the cellar, FX works with only naturally occurring indigenous yeasts. His approach is minimal intervention throughout: no fining, no filtration, and only a low dose of sulfur added prior to bottling. The Syrah vines in the Agly Valley are planted on schist soils, which are characteristic of the area around Espira-de-l'Agly and contribute a mineral backbone to the wine. The Muscat d'Alexandrie brings its signature floral and aromatic lift to the blend.

Serve with grilled whole fish, particularly sea bream or sardines with herbs. The floral aromatic character of the Muscat also works well with lightly spiced dishes — think chicken tagine with preserved lemon or a simple charcuterie plate with melon. Drink slightly chilled, around 55°F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Domaine Lampyres

François-Xavier Dauré (FX) is the fourth generation of the Dauré family to grow grapes in and around Espira-de-l'Agly. The family had long sold their entire harvest to the local cooperative. Starting in 2008, FX began working with different vignerons across Roussillon to gain cellar experience, then joined New Zealander Tom Lubbe at Domaine Matassa in 2015. That same July he took over full control of the family domaine and began converting the vineyards to organic farming.

For five vintages FX worked full-time at Matassa while simultaneously farming 16 hectares of his own vines. He was in the vineyards for hours before sunrise using a headlamp, and his friends began joking that he looked like a lampyre — a firefly in French — which became the name of his domaine. The first Domaine Lampyres vintage was 2016: just 600 bottles of two cuvées produced in FX's garage in Espira. By 2018 he converted a small barn into a dedicated cellar and began pulling more production back from the cooperative. By 2022 he had expanded to 17 hectares, 12 cuvées, and a converted farmhouse cellar, with production around 20,000 bottles.

FX's winemaking philosophy follows the minimal-intervention approach he learned at Matassa: indigenous yeast fermentations, no fining, no filtration, and only low doses of sulfur added at bottling when used at all. Vessel choices vary by cuvée — stainless steel, fiberglass, sandstone amphora, and oak foudre all appear across his range depending on the wine. His Syrah vines are planted on schist soils in the Agly Valley, which he farms organically.

Wine region

Roussillon, France

Roussillon sits in the far southwest corner of France, bordered by the Pyrenees to the south and west, the Mediterranean to the east, and the Corbières hills to the north. It is France's hottest and driest wine region, receiving more than 320 days of sunshine annually, with autumn rains replenishing water tables between growing seasons. The dry northern Tramontane wind is a constant presence, moderating temperatures and reducing disease pressure in the vineyards.

The Agly Valley, running inland from the town of Rivesaltes toward the village of Maury, is the heartland of Roussillon's natural wine movement. Soils in the valley around Espira-de-l'Agly include schist, clay-limestone, and gneiss, with black schist particularly prevalent on the slopes above the river. These ancient metamorphic soils yield low-vigor vines and wines with strong mineral character. Wines from this area are typically sold as Vin de France or IGP Côtes Catalanes, as the region lacks its own dedicated AOC for dry unfortified wines, though the Côtes du Roussillon Villages appellation covers some of the northern zones along the Agly river.
