Tasting notes

The semi-carbonic vinification in cement keeps this Syrah-Carignan blend lifted and crunchy — red cherry, violet, and garrigue rather than the overripe, heavy fruit common in Roussillon. The schist and marl soils of Calce come through as a wet stone undercurrent that grounds the whole thing without adding weight.

Mar i Muntanya translates from Catalan as "sea and mountains" — a direct reference to the geography around Calce, a village of roughly 200 people situated at the foot of the Pyrenees, ten miles northwest of Perpignan. The domaine's vineyards sit on a mosaic of brown and black slate, iron-rich marl, and alluvial gravel, with the mother rock lying just eight to fifteen inches below the surface in many parcels. Two constant winds shape the growing season: the Tramontane from the north and the Marin off the Mediterranean, both of which preserve natural acidity and discourage fungal pressure without chemical intervention.

The 2017 is a blend of approximately 45% Syrah and 45% Carignan with a splash of Grenache, drawn from vines averaging 20 to 40 years of age. The fruit is semi-carbonically macerated in cement vats, which lifts the red fruit character and keeps the wine light on its feet. A portion is also raised in large oak barrels. Fermentation proceeds with native yeasts, and the wine is bottled without fining or filtration, with minimal added sulfur.

Domaine de l'Horizon is certified biodynamic through Biodyvin. Yields across the estate run between 10 and 20 hl/ha. Thomas Teibert founded the domaine in 2006 after encountering the terroir of Calce through Gerard Gauby; the estate is now continued by Emmanuelle Maltas and Joachim Christ. The wine is labeled IGP Côtes Catalanes, the designation used for dry wines from this Catalan corner of the Pyrénées-Orientales that fall outside the Côtes du Roussillon AOC rules.

On the palate, expect bright red fruit, garrigue, wet stone minerality, and a floral edge from the Syrah. The Carignan adds savory depth and structure without weight. This is a wine that drinks well slightly cool, around 58-62°F, and does not need decanting.

Works well with roasted lamb chops, duck confit, or a plate of charcuterie and aged sheep's milk cheese. The savory Carignan component makes it a natural match for herb-crusted pork or grilled merguez. Serve slightly cool at around 58-62°F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Domaine de l'Horizon

Domaine de l'Horizon was founded in 2006 by German-born Thomas Teibert and the Christ family (Doris and Joachim Christ) in the village of Calce, Roussillon. Teibert came to Calce after a career that included winemaking at Manincor in Alto Adige and export work for the Stockinger cooperage in Austria. He met Gerard Gauby in 2005 and was drawn immediately to the complexity and difficulty of the Calce terroir. The estate is now continued by Emmanuelle Maltas, a young oenologist engineer, alongside Joachim Christ.

The domaine farms approximately 17 hectares of vines with an average age of 70 years. Varieties include Carignan, Grenache Noir, Syrah, Macabeu, Grenache Gris, and Grenache Blanc. All farming is certified organic and biodynamic through Biodyvin, with vineyard tasks planned according to the lunar calendar and biodynamic preparations applied in place of synthetic treatments. Yields are kept between 10 and 20 hl/ha.

In the cellar, all wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts. Red wines typically undergo semi-carbonic or whole-cluster maceration depending on the cuvée, and are aged in a combination of cement tanks, used demi-muids, and large Stockinger foudres. Wines are bottled without fining or filtration, with average total SO2 around 30 mg/L.

Wine region

Roussillon, France

Roussillon occupies the southeastern corner of France in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, bordered by the Pyrenees to the west and south and the Mediterranean to the east. It is historically and culturally Catalan rather than French. The climate is Mediterranean with hot, dry summers, but the village of Calce, ten miles northwest of Perpignan, benefits from two opposing winds — the Tramontane from the north and the Marin from the sea — that keep temperatures in check and acidity naturally high. These conditions make chemical intervention largely unnecessary.

Calce sits where the slate massif of the Pyrenees collided with the limestone massif of the Corbières during the last ice age, producing an extraordinary variety of soils within a compact zone: brown and black slate, schist, iron-oxide marl, and alluvial gravel. Dry wines from this area are labeled IGP Côtes Catalanes rather than the broader Côtes du Roussillon AOC, which gives producers freedom to work with single varietals and non-traditional blends. Grenache, Carignan, Syrah, Macabeu, and Grenache Gris are the key varieties. Domaine Gauby, Domaine Matassa, Olivier Pithon, and Domaine de l'Horizon have put Calce on the international natural wine map.
