Tasting notes

The color alone — a deep pomegranate pink — signals this is not a pale Provence-style rosé. The fruit is bright and crunchy with a saline, garrigue-laced finish that speaks directly to the Côte Vermeille terroir. Zero sulfites added, bottled young, and built to be opened and enjoyed.

Magrana is a direct-press rosé from Tutti Frutti Ananas, a collaborative project based in Banyuls-sur-Mer on the Côte Vermeille, where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean. The 2019 is 80% Syrah and 20% Carignan, sourced from organically farmed vineyards planted over a mix of sand, schist, and quartz — parcels both near the coast and higher up in the surrounding hills.

The grapes are direct-pressed on arrival at the cellar and fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel, then aged in large concrete vats. The wine is bottled young, unfined, unfiltered, and with no added sulfites. "Magrana" means pomegranate in Catalan, a reference to the wine's deep, vivid pink color in the glass.

The wine is made at Les 9 Caves, a shared cellar the three co-producers use in the center of Banyuls-sur-Mer. The label reflects the winemakers' backgrounds: Manuel di Vecchi Staraz (Italian, Vinyer de la Ruca), Zé Tafé (Portuguese, La Cave des Nomades), and Joachim Roque (French-Catalan, Domaine Carterole). Each Tutti Frutti Ananas wine takes its name from a fruit in one of their native languages.

The Collioure and Banyuls area is one of the most difficult vineyard landscapes in France — steep schist terraces that require hand work throughout, with notoriously low yields. The wines from this pocket of Roussillon carry a distinctly Mediterranean character: sun-warmed fruit balanced by salt air and garrigue.

Works well with grilled fish, anchovies, and dishes with briny or herb-forward flavors. Good alongside a charcuterie spread or fresh goat cheese. The slight bitterness on the finish makes it a natural match with bitter greens, grilled vegetables, and Mediterranean-style salads.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Tutti Frutti Ananas

Tutti Frutti Ananas is a collaborative project initiated by Manuel di Vecchi Staraz of Vinyer de la Ruca (Italian), Zé Tafé of La Cave des Nomades (Portuguese), and Joachim Roque of Domaine Carterole (French, of Catalan identity), all based in Banyuls-sur-Mer. The project began when Joachim — whose family had worked with the local cooperative for years — retrieved an additional eight hectares of vines and proposed to his colleagues that they start a joint venture rather than channel the fruit through the coop. Each winemaker also contributes fruit from higher-yielding parcels on their own estates.

The vineyards are farmed organically over soils of sand, schist, and quartz, with parcels both close to the sea and higher up in the hills above Banyuls-sur-Mer. Because the terrain in the Collioure-Banyuls area is notoriously steep, the project's fruit comes largely from parcels on 'the plain' — still very steep, but workable mechanically, unlike the terraced estate vineyards on pure schist that each producer uses for their individual labels.

All wines are made together at Les 9 Caves, a shared cellar in a converted garage in the center of Banyuls-sur-Mer. Fermentations are spontaneous, using only native yeasts, in stainless steel or concrete tanks. The wines are bottled young, unfined, and unfiltered. Sulfur is not added to most cuvées; when it is used, it is added only at bottling in minimal amounts, and the label indicates whether SO2 was used. Casks are not used in the winemaking process. Each wine in the range is named after a fruit — Magrana (pomegranate) in Catalan, Toranja (grapefruit) in Portuguese, Nespola (loquat) in Italian — reflecting the nationalities of the three collaborators.

Wine region

Roussillon, France

Banyuls-sur-Mer sits at the southern end of Roussillon, where the Albères massif — the easternmost foothills of the Pyrenees — descends steeply to the Mediterranean. The vineyards here cling to schist terraces at elevations up to 400 meters, facing the sea. The climate is the driest and sunniest in France, averaging around 325 days of sunshine annually, and the Tramontane wind blows roughly one day in three, reducing disease pressure in the vines. Soils are primarily grey-brown schist of the Cambrian period, with some quartz and sand closer to the coast — all low in fertility, forcing vines to root deep and yield small quantities of concentrated fruit.

The Côte Vermeille encompasses four communes: Banyuls-sur-Mer, Collioure, Port-Vendres, and Cerbère. Two AOC designations govern the area: AOC Banyuls for fortified Vins Doux Naturels (minimum 50% Grenache Noir), and AOC Collioure for dry still wines in red, rosé, and white. Producers who fall outside the AOC rules — as Tutti Frutti Ananas does — bottle under the IGP Côte Vermeille or Vin de France designations. The main red and rosé grape varieties grown here are Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Carignan. The slopes are so steep that mechanization is impossible; all vineyard work is done by hand.
