Tasting notes

At 11.5% ABV with no added SO2 and natural MLF, the 2018 Love White lands somewhere between a crisp northern Rhône blanc and a California field blend — stone fruit and white flower from the Marsanne and Roussanne, then a citrusy snap from Picpoul that keeps the whole thing from going soft. Unfiltered and fermented variety by variety in neutral oak, it has genuine texture without weight.

The 2018 Love White is a Rhône-inspired white blend from Broc Cellars, an urban winery operating out of Berkeley, California. The 2018 vintage is composed of 43% Marsanne, 28% Roussanne, 17% Grenache Blanc, and 12% Picpoul — the first year Picpoul entered the blend, sourced from vines grafted onto Roussanne rootstock at Love Ranch using cuttings from Rorick Vineyard. At 11.5% ABV, it sits on the lighter end of the spectrum for the variety.

All four grape varieties were fermented separately using only native yeasts. The wine was then aged in neutral French oak barrels with no SO2 added during fermentation or aging. Malolactic fermentation occurred naturally. The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined, and may contain light sediment.

Grapes were harvested in August to preserve natural acidity — an intentional choice by winemaker Chris Brockway to keep the wine fresh and low in alcohol. The Marsanne and Roussanne contribute texture and stone fruit character, Grenache Blanc adds freshness, and Picpoul brings citrus-driven brightness and lift.

Broc Cellars sources exclusively from organically farmed vineyards across California. The Love White line is designed as an affordable, everyday expression of Rhône white varieties grown in the state, with minimal intervention in the cellar.

Pair with steamed mussels or clams in white wine broth, where the wine's acidity and light salinity will hold up well. Works equally with roasted chicken thighs with herbs, goat cheese crostini, or a simple green salad with lemon vinaigrette. The Picpoul-driven brightness also cuts through lightly fried foods like zucchini fritters or tempura vegetables.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Broc Cellars

Broc Cellars was founded in 2002 by Chris Brockway, who grew up in Omaha, Nebraska and eventually made his way to California after developing an interest in wine while working in restaurants in the Pacific Northwest. He completed coursework at UC Davis and finished an oenology degree at Fresno State before beginning to make wine commercially. The first official Broc Cellars release came in 2006, and the winery moved into its Berkeley space in 2008 — originally a former ink factory in the city's Gilman District.

Broc operates as an urban négociant, sourcing grapes from organically farmed vineyards across California, from the Central Coast to Mendocino. All vineyards the winery works with follow organic or similarly low-intervention farming practices. In 2021, Brockway took over farming operations at Fox Hill Vineyard in Mendocino County, a site planted primarily to Italian varieties, and Broc Cellars became full owners of the property in 2023. Fox Hill received CCOF organic certification in 2024.

Every Broc Cellars wine is made using spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and bacteria only. No nutrients, commercial yeast, enzymes, or tannins are added at any point. Sulfur is not added during fermentation or aging; small amounts may be added at bottling depending on the wine and vintage. Grapes are basket pressed, and wines are generally bottled unfined and unfiltered. The cellar approach is deliberately low-tech, prioritizing grape expression over winemaking intervention.

Wine region

Solano County, USA

Solano County Green Valley is a small AVA located approximately 12 miles northeast of San Pablo Bay, in the southern foothills of the Vaca Mountains and just eight miles from Napa township. The valley runs roughly north to south and encompasses about 800 planted acres. Its proximity to San Pablo Bay drives a temperate maritime climate, with cool fog pushing into the valley most mornings and evenings from May through early fall — conditions that extend the growing season and preserve natural acidity in the fruit. Daytime warmth gives way to cold fog each night, allowing grapes to recover and maintain freshness.

Soils in Solano County Green Valley are predominantly deep, free-draining alluvial loams deposited on valley floors and stream terraces. The Solano County Green Valley AVA received its federal designation in 1982 and is considered a North Coast sub-appellation. Broc Cellars also sources fruit from Wirth Ranch within this AVA, where iron-rich volcanic soils on steep slopes support old-vine Valdiguié and Zinfandel. The region is significantly cooler than the adjacent Suisun Valley and broadly comparable in climate to the southern end of Napa Valley, making it well suited to varieties that need a long, slow ripening window.
