Tasting notes

Trepat is one of Spain's rarest red grapes, grown almost entirely within Conca de Barberà, and it gives this blend a pale ruby hue, lifted red cherry aromatics, and juicy acidity that you don't find in most Spanish reds. The APRODISCA collaboration is real and documented, the label is designed by association members, and a portion of proceeds directly supports their Occupational Therapy Service.

Les Gallinetes is a red blend from Mas Foraster, a family estate in Montblanc in the DO Conca de Barberà of central Catalonia. The 2018 is made from organically farmed Garnacha, Trepat, and Syrah grown on alluvial clay soils on sunny south-facing slopes at around 370 meters elevation. Grapes are harvested by hand, with some biodynamic practices followed in the vineyard.

Fermentation is spontaneous, and the wine is aged for several months in French oak barrels. The name translates to "the hens" in Catalan, a nod to the old henhouse on the estate that was converted into the winery's vinification room when Mas Foraster was established in 1998.

The wine is made in collaboration with APRODISCA, the Association for People with Mental Disability of Conca de Barberà. Members of APRODISCA design the label, and Josep Foraster contributes a portion of proceeds to the association's Occupational Therapy Service. It is a genuinely functional social project, not a marketing concept.

Trepat is an indigenous variety grown almost exclusively in Conca de Barberà. In this blend it contributes freshness, red fruit aromatics, and naturally low alcohol, while Garnacha adds roundness and Syrah provides structure and a hint of spice. The result is light-bodied, fruit-forward, and easy to drink young.

Serve slightly chilled at around 58-62F. Works well with grilled vegetables, roast chicken, light pasta dishes with tomato sauce, or a board of mild Catalan cheeses and cured meats. The low tannin and bright acidity make it versatile at the table.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Josep Foraster

The Foraster family has cultivated vineyards and olive trees in the township of Montblanc for more than 150 years. The modern winery, Mas Foraster, was established in 1998 when Josep Foraster and his father decided to build a cellar in an old farm structure on the property and begin bottling wine from fruit they had previously sold in bulk. Josep Foraster died of cancer in 1999, just as the first vintage was reaching the market. His sister Julieta Foraster and her son Ricard Sebastià Foraster took over the estate and have managed it since. Ricard took charge of the cellar in 2005, and Adria Foraster, son of the original Josep, joined the project in 2017.

Mas Foraster farms approximately 30 hectares of vineyards, with 22 hectares owned and the remainder rented from local growers. All parcels are certified organic or in organic conversion. The vineyards are planted at 375 to 650 meters above sea level on soils containing limestone, stones, slate, and clay. Red varieties planted include Trepat, Garnacha, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tempranillo. Organic viticulture has been practiced on the estate since 2011, with some biodynamic practices also applied.

Fermentation across the range uses spontaneous native yeasts. The winery uses a mix of French oak barrels, concrete eggs, and foudres for aging, with vessel choice varying by wine. For Les Gallinetes, the wine is aged in French oak barrels. The winery produces around 180,000 to 200,000 bottles per year and exports approximately 40% of production. The vinification room was converted from the old henhouse on the property, which is the origin of the name Les Gallinetes.

Wine region

Conca de Barberà, Spain

Conca de Barberà is a small DO in the northern part of Tarragona province in central Catalonia. The word 'conca' is Catalan for basin, describing the geography accurately: the vineyards sit in the river valleys of the Francolí and Anguera, enclosed on all sides by mountain ranges including the Serra de Prades to the south and the Serra de Miramar to the east. Vineyard elevations range from 350 to 900 meters above sea level, with the valley floor itself sitting around 400 meters. The DO received official status in 1985, and covers 14 municipalities centered on the historic walled town of Montblanc.

The climate is transitional Mediterranean, with warm summers moderated by altitude and cool nights that help grapes retain natural acidity. Rainfall averages 450 to 550mm per year. Soils on the valley floor are predominantly limestone with clay, while slate appears near the foothills of the Serra de Prades. The appellation is best known for Trepat, a red grape indigenous to this corner of Catalonia used historically for rosé Cava but increasingly vinified as a still red wine. Most grapes grown in the DO are still sold for Cava production, which keeps the pool of still-wine producers relatively small and focused.
