Tasting notes

The carbonic maceration keeps things crunchy and fresh, with cherry, violet, and a flicker of dark pepper where the Syrah enters. It is the kind of Loire red you reach for lightly chilled, and it drinks without effort.

L'Endemique is a Vin de France red from Jeremy Quastana, based in Fresnes in the Loir-et-Cher department, near Cheverny. The 2017 blends Gamay from his own 2.2-hectare parcel on a gentle slope of clay over silex with Syrah sourced from Anne Leclerc in the Roussillon, all certified organic and grown on sandy soils. The Syrah came into the blend because hail in 2016 damaged a significant portion of Quastana's own harvest, leading him to supplement production with purchased fruit for the following vintage.

Quastana uses carbonic maceration in the cellar, a technique he absorbed during his time at Marcel Lapierre's domaine in Beaujolais. Fermentation proceeds with native yeasts, with no new oak used in aging. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration and with very little to no added sulfur dioxide.

The result sits between the lighter-bodied, florally driven style of Loire Gamay and the darker, peppery register that Roussillon Syrah brings. Cherry fruit and violet aromatics from the Gamay meet a background of darker berry and subtle spice from the Syrah. The wine drinks with freshness and low tannin grip, characteristic of the carbonic maceration approach.

Classified as Vin de France because the grape blend and geographic sourcing fall outside any single Loire appellation's rules. No added sulfites, unfined, unfiltered.

Serve lightly chilled at around 58-60F. Works well alongside charcuterie, grilled duck breast, or a mushroom and lentil dish. Also good with soft, washed-rind cheeses.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Jeremy Quastana

Jeremy Quastana began working in the vineyards and cellar of Olivier Lemasson of Les Vins Contes while enrolled as a history student, spending more time in the cellar than in lecture halls before formally abandoning his degree. He subsequently enrolled in a winemaking program in Bordeaux, then completed internships with Marcel Lapierre in Beaujolais and with Louis-Antoine Luyt at Clos Ouvert in Chile before returning to the Loire.

After completing his studies and internships, Quastana purchased a 2.2-hectare parcel in Touraine, near Olivier Lemasson's main plots in the Loir-et-Cher not far from Cheverny. He spent over two years rehabilitating vines that had been farmed conventionally, converting them to organics. The single parcel holds young-vine Gamay, old-vine Gamay (50 years), and mid-aged Cot (approximately 40 years) on a gentle slope of clay over silex. Viticulture is organic.

In the cellar, Quastana works with carbonic and semi-carbonic maceration methods learned at Marcel Lapierre's domaine. He uses no new wood, does not fine or filter, and adds very little to no sulfur dioxide depending on the vintage. In 2016 hail damaged a substantial portion of his harvest; to supplement production he sourced certified-organic Syrah from Anne Leclerc in the Roussillon, grown on sandy soils, which he blended with his Gamay for the L'Endemique 2017. His wines are labeled Vin de France.

Wine region

Loire Valley, France

Jeremy Quastana's vineyards sit near Fresnes in the Loir-et-Cher department, on the edge of the Sologne, roughly midway between Blois on the Loire and Saint-Aignan on the Cher. The area has a broadly continental climate moderated by the extensive forests of the Sologne and the thermal influence of the Loire river. Soils in this part of Touraine are variable, with sand, clay, and silex (flint) appearing across different parcels. Quastana's own plot sits on a gentle slope of clay over silex.

The broader Loire Valley stretches roughly 800 kilometers from the Atlantic near Nantes to Sancerre in the east, spanning four main sub-regions: Pays Nantais, Anjou-Saumur, Touraine, and Centre-Loire. Touraine appellations include Cheverny, Cour-Cheverny, Vouvray, Chinon, and Bourgueil, among others. Gamay is a permitted variety in Cheverny and Touraine AOCs, typically blended with Pinot Noir for reds. Because Quastana's L'Endemique 2017 blends Loire Gamay with Roussillon Syrah, it falls outside any single AOC's rules and is labeled Vin de France.
