Tasting notes

Lambrusco di Sorbara at this level is the lightest, most aromatic expression of the grape family: salmon pink, barely 11% ABV, with a grapefruit-and-wild-rose nose and a palate that crackles with pomegranate acidity. The ancestral method keeps it cloudy, alive with lees, and texturally more interesting than any tank-fermented version.

  • Similar To: For fans of pét-nat, Crémant Rosé, and high-acid sparkling wines who want low ABV and savory depth

Radice is 100% Lambrusco di Sorbara from Paltrinieri's Il Cristo vineyard, a 15-hectare holding in the narrowest strip of land between the Secchia and Panaro rivers north of Modena. The soils are sandy and chalky alluvial deposits at around 25 meters elevation. Grapes are hand-harvested in the second half of September.

This is an ancestral method wine: the must is gently pressed without maceration and fermented in stainless steel with native yeasts, then bottled mid-fermentation so the second fermentation and bubble development happen entirely in the bottle. There is no disgorgement and no dosage. The wine is sealed with a crown cap and left cloudy with lees sediment in suspension, which gives it a faintly turbid, salmon-pink appearance and a fine, persistent perlage.

The nose leads with grapefruit, wild strawberry, and wild rose. On the palate it is dry and electric, with pomegranate and green apple peel driving the finish. As you work toward the bottom of the bottle, lees contact adds a bread-crust quality. Acidity is the defining structural feature: piercing and clean. ABV is 11%.

Paltrinieri is considered by many critics and importers to be the benchmark producer of Lambrusco di Sorbara. Radice earns this reputation by doing something technically demanding in a region where the easy path is the Charmat method: putting the work of bubble-making inside the bottle, then leaving the wine exactly as it is.

Classic pairings from Modena: tortellini in broth, gnocco fritto, prosciutto di Modena, and Modenese crescentine. The high acidity and fine bubble also make it effective with fried fish, raw shellfish, and light raw-milk cheeses. Serve well chilled at 44-48°F and finish the bottle the same day.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Paltrinieri

Cantina Paltrinieri was founded in 1926 by Achille Paltrinieri in Sorbara, in the province of Modena. Achille's son Gianfranco expanded the estate, and since 1998 it has been run by the fourth generation: Alberto Paltrinieri and his wife Barbara. The winery holds 17 hectares of vineyards, all in the Cristo di Sorbara area, a site that sits at the narrowest point between the Secchia and Panaro rivers. The address is Via Cristo 49, Sorbara.

Farming at Paltrinieri is lotta integrata, the Italian sustainable approach equivalent to lutte raisonnée. In most years the work is effectively organic. Vines are trained on cordon systems (cordona semplice and cordone speronato), harvested by hand in the second half of September. Soils are alluvial, predominantly sand and chalk, at an elevation of approximately 25 meters. Paltrinieri is widely cited by importers and critics including Ian d'Agata of Vinous as the benchmark producer of Lambrusco di Sorbara.

All fermentations use native yeasts. For Radice specifically, the grapes are gently pressed without skin maceration and fermented in stainless steel. The wine is then bottled during its primary fermentation, completing that single fermentation in the bottle without disgorgement or dosage. This ancestral method leaves residual yeast sediment in the bottle, resulting in a cloudy, salmon-pink wine sealed under crown cap. The production is approximately 20,000 bottles total across all labels.

Wine region

Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Lambrusco di Sorbara DOC received its DOC classification in 1970 and sits north of Modena on the Po River plain in Emilia-Romagna, between the Secchia and Panaro rivers. The zone is defined by ancient sandy alluvial soils, permeable and low in nutrients, which limit vine vigor and concentrate aromatics. The climate is continental: hot summers, cold winters, and sufficient spring and autumn rain to sustain the vines, with cool nights during the growing season preserving acidity.

The Lambrusco di Sorbara grape itself has a structural quirk that matters to winemakers: its flowers are largely pollen-sterile, causing significant flower drop and yield reduction, sometimes by more than a third of the potential crop. This natural limitation concentrates flavor in the surviving berries. DOC regulations require a minimum of 60% Lambrusco di Sorbara in the blend, with up to 40% Lambrusco Salamino permitted. The resulting wines are the lightest in color of all the Lambrusco DOCs, with pale ruby to salmon hues, intense floral character, and the highest natural acidity of the category. Permitted production communes include Bastiglia, Bomporto, Nonantola, Ravarino, and San Prospero, among others.
