Tasting notes

This is one of the few widely available expressions of Caprettone, a grape grown only on the slopes of Vesuvius and only recently recognized as a distinct variety from Coda di Volpe. The volcanic ash and lapilli soils give the wine a striking mineral edge alongside citrus peel and white stone fruit. At 12% ABV it stays crisp, food-friendly, and genuinely unusual.

Poggio delle Baccanti Lacryma Christi White 2020 is a dry white wine from the Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio DOC in Campania, made from 60% Caprettone, 20% Catalanesca, and 20% Falanghina. The grapes are grown organically on volcanic ash and lapilli soils on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius near Sant'Antonio Abate on the Sorrento Peninsula, where the La Mura family has farmed since the 1950s.

Caprettone is the dominant grape here and the defining variety of Vesuvian white wine. Long confused with Coda di Volpe, DNA analysis confirmed it as a distinct variety, now recognized as the primary white grape of the Vesuvio DOC. It produces wines with moderate acidity, a characteristic mineral note attributed to the sulfur-rich volcanic soils, and aromas of citrus, white flowers, and stone fruit. Catalanesca adds aromatic lift, while Falanghina contributes citrus freshness.

Winemaking follows a low-intervention approach: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, no fining or filtration, and minimal sulfite additions at bottling. The wine is fermented in stainless steel, preserving the bright, volcanic character of the fruit.

The Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio DOC sits within the Vesuvius National Park. Vineyards occupy the lower and mid-elevation slopes of the volcano, roughly 50 to 400 meters above sea level, in soils of volcanic ash, pumice, and lapilli that drain freely and concentrate mineral expression in the wine.

Pair with grilled branzino, spaghetti alle vongole, or fried mozzarella di bufala. The wine's mineral backbone and moderate acidity also work well with lemon-dressed seafood antipasti, grilled calamari, and dishes seasoned with Mediterranean herbs. Its freshness cuts through fried foods common to the Neapolitan table.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Poggio delle Baccanti

Poggio delle Baccanti is a family-run estate located in Sant'Antonio Abate on the Sorrento Peninsula in the Province of Naples, overlooking Mount Vesuvius. The winery was founded in the 1950s by Raffaele La Mura, the son of a winemaker, who began producing and selling wine alongside his brother Paolo before establishing the estate independently. The focus from the outset was on the wines most rooted in local tradition: Gragnano Rosso Frizzante from the volcanic hills above Gragnano, and the various expressions of Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio from the slopes of the volcano.

Three generations of the La Mura family now run the estate, including brothers Raffaele and Paolo La Mura and their cousins Giovanni and Raffaele, with Raffaele (the younger) serving as the winemaker. The family farms exclusively with indigenous Campanian varieties and uses no synthetic inputs across all vineyards. Their stated farming philosophy is a commitment to organic management and working only with local grape varieties.

In the cellar, Poggio delle Baccanti uses spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, ferments in stainless steel, and bottles unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfite additions. No commercial yeasts or additives are used. The approach is designed to preserve the mineral and aromatic character of grapes grown on volcanic soils.

Wine region

Campania, Italy

Campania is a southern Italian region centered on the Gulf of Naples, with a viticultural history traceable to ancient Greek settlers who planted vines in the area as early as the fifth century BC. The region's climate is Mediterranean, with warm dry summers tempered along the coast by sea breezes from both the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Gulf of Salerno. The volcanic geology of the area, shaped by both Mount Vesuvius and the Campi Flegrei caldera, produces soils of ash, pumice, and lapilli that are low in organic matter, drain freely, and force vines to develop deep root systems. These conditions produce wines with pronounced mineral character and moderate to high natural acidity.

The Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio DOC is a sub-designation within the broader Vesuvio DOC, established in 1983, covering vineyards within the Vesuvius National Park on the slopes of the volcano between roughly 50 and 400 meters above sea level. White wines must contain a minimum of 45% Caprettone and/or Coda di Volpe, with Falanghina and Greco permitted up to 35%. Campania also holds several other important appellations: Taurasi DOCG for Aglianico reds, Fiano di Avellino DOCG, and Greco di Tufo DOCG for whites. The Penisola Sorrentina DOC, where Poggio delle Baccanti is based, recognizes Gragnano as a key subzone for naturally sparkling red wines.
