La Vigne du Perron Les Ermitures 2022

Regular price $60.00
LIGHT BODYFULL BODY
  • Style: Dry, medium to full-bodied Gamay with dense, ripe dark fruit and a bloody, mineral complexity; the 2022 vintage is more concentrated than most years due to warm summer conditions, with greater fruit weight than the typical Les Ermitures profile
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Gamay; chalky clay-limestone soils at the base of the rock face above Villebois, Bugey, Ain; approximately 40-year-old vines; chemical-free farming, hand-harvested, low yields
  • Winemaking: Whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts in upright fiberglass tanks; semi-carbonic maceration approximately 12 days; aged 12 months in old neutral barrels (demi-muid); bottled barrel by barrel when ready; unfined, unfiltered, no added sulfur
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 59–63°F; 20 to 30 minutes' decanting recommended for the 2022; can also be served at 57°F with a light chill to balance the ripeness
  • Pairing: Côte de bœuf grillée
  • Similar to: A full-bodied Beaujolais cru such as Moulin-à-Vent or Morgon from a warm vintage, or a mineral-edged natural Gamay from the Loire Valley

Tasting notes

Deep ruby with a purple edge. The nose is ripe and expressive, with dark cherry, blueberry, a hint of iron-like minerality, and a faint earthy note. The palate is dense and fruit-forward, with firm but ripe tannins, bright acidity, and a long, bloody, savory finish.

Food pairings

Côte de bœuf grillée, Moroccan lamb tagine, duck breast, charcuterie, lentil stew, aged Gruyère, sausages with mustard.

Product description

La Vigne du Perron Les Ermitures 2022 is a dry red wine made from 100% Gamay, produced by François Grinand at his estate in Villebois, Bugey. The grapes grow on chalky, clay-limestone soils at the base of the limestone rock face that rises steeply above the village, on vines approximately 40 years old. The wine is fermented whole-cluster with indigenous yeasts in fiberglass tanks, then aged in old barrels for 12 months before being bottled without filtration and with no additions. La Vigne du Perron Les Ermitures 2022 is a Vin de France at 14.5% ABV, reflecting a warm growing season.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

La Vigne du Perron

François Grinand has been making wine in Villebois since 1993, when he left a career teaching piano at a conservatory to farm the limestone hillsides above his hometown. His early years were marked by financial difficulty: a series of poor harvests led to bankruptcy in 2007, but two Belgian enthusiasts who had come to know his wines stepped in and purchased his entire stock to rescue the project. The domaine was relaunched in 2009 under the names Domaine du Perron and La Vigne du Perron, and has operated without interruption since.

The estate covers around two to three hectares across several distinct parcels on the slopes and at the base of the escarpment above Villebois. The vines are accessible only on foot, and all work in the vineyard is done by hand. No chemicals of any kind are used, and the farming principles draw from organic and biodynamic traditions without formal certification. Yields are deliberately low, and the Gamay vines for Les Ermitures are approximately 40 years old.

The name Les Ermitures has a story attached to it. "Ermitures" comes from the French word "friche," meaning abandoned or wild ground, and refers to the fact that Grinand keeps his parcels covered with grass rather than using herbicides to maintain bare soil as was common practice among neighboring growers. The name was a gentle commentary on that contrast.

In the cellar, Grinand's approach is consistent across all his reds: whole-cluster fermentation in fiberglass with indigenous yeasts, aging in old neutral barrels, and bottling barrel by barrel when the wine is ready. Since 2010, nothing has been added to any wine at any stage. Everything leaves the cellar unfined and unfiltered.

Wine region

Bugey, France

Bugey is a geologically and culturally distinctive wine region in the Ain department of eastern France, perched at the southern edge of the Jura massif and bounded by the Rhône to the south and west. It shares grape varieties and some stylistic tendencies with both Savoie and Beaujolais, but its wines have their own identity, shaped by the region's specific combination of limestone terrain, Alpine-influenced climate, and the relative isolation of its hillside parcels from the mainstream of French wine commerce.

The specific parcel that produces Les Ermitures occupies a site at the foot of the limestone escarpment directly above Villebois. The soil here is chalky and clay-limestone, different in texture and drainage from the steeper slope parcels higher up the hillside. This lower-slope position gives the vines access to slightly deeper soils with more calcareous material, which in cool and moderate vintages produces Gamay with a particular mineral tension and freshness. In warmer years like 2022, the combination of ripeness and chalk produces a wine of notable density alongside that mineral edge.

Gamay is the dominant red variety of Bugey, as it is in Beaujolais to the west. In Bugey, however, the limestone and calcareous scree soils produce a different expression from the granitic and schist terroirs of Beaujolais. The mineral saltiness and firm structure that limestone imparts distinguish Bugey Gamay from the fruitier, softer style common in lighter Beaujolais crus. The region's cooler temperatures and Alpine influence also help preserve acidity, giving the wines grip and precision. The Bugey AOC received its full AOC status in 2009, and still wines like Les Ermitures, released under the Vin de France designation, sit alongside the more widely known sparkling and pétillant styles of the region.
