Tasting notes

Kritt delivers a Pinot Blanc that stands apart from most Alsatian versions: ferruginous quartz soils give the wine a firm, saline minerality that cuts through the ripe white peach and mirabelle fruit. Lees aging in old oak foudres adds texture without obscuring that stony, precise character.

Kritt is a lieu-dit outside Andlau in the Bas-Rhin, producing grapes on ferruginous clay soils that are stony and rich in quartz. The vines are around 30 years old and farmed biodynamically. Those soils pull freshness and mineral salinity into the wine while giving the fruit enough flesh to hold the wine's weight. The Pinot Blanc is vinified in old Alsatian oak foudres with native yeasts, aged on its lees for up to 15 months before bottling with minimal sulfur addition.

The 2018 vintage in Alsace was warm and dry, which delivered ripe, concentrated fruit. In the glass this is pale straw yellow with a nose of white peach, mirabelle plum, and white flowers. The palate is fresh with a taut acidic spine, showing the grip the quartz soils impart. The finish is long, saline, and clean.

Domaine Marc Kreydenweiss converted to biodynamics in 1989, among the first in Alsace to do so. Since 2007, Antoine Kreydenweiss has run the Alsace estate. The domaine holds 13.5 hectares across 25 parcels in and around Andlau, including plots in the Grand Cru vineyards Kastelberg, Wiebelsberg, Moenchberg, and Kirchberg de Barr. Kritt is certified organic through Ecocert and biodynamic through Biodyvin.

Works well with raw oysters, steamed mussels, and other shellfish where the wine's saline finish acts as seasoning. Also good alongside fresh goat cheese, tarte flambée, or simple grilled white fish. The wine's texture holds up to a light cream sauce.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Marc Kreydenweiss

The Kreydenweiss family has been growing grapes in Andlau since at least the 1750s. In 1945 Denise Gresser married René Kreydenweiss and the couple took over the established Gresser estate. Their son Marc succeeded them in 1971 and set out to make terroir-specific wines from the parcels around Andlau. Marc began converting to biodynamic viticulture in 1989, one of the first vignerons in Alsace to do so. In 1999 the family established a second domaine in the Costières de Nîmes in the Languedoc. Antoine Kreydenweiss, Marc's son, took over management of the Alsace estate in 2007 at age 26 and continues to run it today.

The Alsace estate covers 13.5 hectares across 25 parcels within a 10-kilometer radius of Andlau, including holdings in the communes of Eichhoffen, Mittelbergheim, and Barr. The estate is certified organic through Ecocert and biodynamic through Biodyvin. Eighty percent of the vineyards are on hillsides or slopes with predominantly south or south-east exposure. Vineyard work includes severe pruning to control yields, manual debudding, and hand harvesting with two rounds of sorting. Antoine uses a plow horse named Sam for inter-row tillage. Since 2016, the estate has also sourced grapes from a small number of local growers farming organically or biodynamically.

In the cellar, grapes are whole-bunch pressed slowly, then fermented spontaneously with native yeasts. Wines are aged on their lees in old Alsatian oak foudres — sometimes for up to three years depending on the cuvée — and bottled with minimal sulfur additions. The Kritt Pinot Blanc spends approximately 15 months on lees before bottling. No fining or heavy filtration is used. Every year since 1984, the domaine has commissioned a different artist to design the vintage labels.

Wine region

Alsace, France

Alsace runs roughly 110 miles north to south along France's northeastern border with Germany, with vineyards planted on the eastern slopes of the Vosges Mountains at altitudes between 175 and 420 meters. The Vosges create a pronounced rain shadow, making Alsace one of the driest wine regions in France — Colmar receives around 500 to 600 millimeters of rainfall per year. The resulting climate is semi-continental: warm, dry summers followed by long autumns that allow gradual ripening and the retention of bright acidity.

Alsace produces wine under three AOCs: Alsace AOC for still varietal wines, Alsace Grand Cru AOC for wines from 51 classified sites, and Crémant d'Alsace for traditional-method sparkling wine. The region's geology is unusually diverse, with soils ranging from granite, schist, and black slate to limestone, marl, sandstone, and clay. Andlau, in the northern Bas-Rhin, sits on an especially complex mosaic of terroirs — within a short distance of the village you encounter black slate, granite, red sandstone, and the ferruginous clay-quartz soils of Kritt. The four Andlau Grand Crus are Kastelberg, Wiebelsberg, Moenchberg, and Kirchberg de Barr. The key white varieties are Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Muscat.
