Tasting notes

Kritt punches above its AOC Alsace classification — the quartz-rich, iron-laden clay gives the Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois blend a mineral spine and saline finish you rarely find at this level. Fifteen months on the lees in old foudre adds texture without weight, keeping the wine taut and precise.

Kritt is a lieu-dit vineyard on the outskirts of Andlau, in the Bas-Rhin department of Alsace. The 3.7-hectare plot sits at 200 meters elevation on a south-facing slope, with ferruginous clay soils that are stony and rich in quartz. Vines are 20 to 40 years old, planted at 5,000 vines per hectare, and farmed biodynamically under Ecocert organic and Biodyvin certifications.

The wine is a blend of Pinot Blanc and Pinot Auxerrois — two closely related varieties that perform well on this iron-rich, mineral soil. Grapes are hand-harvested, pressed slowly as whole bunches, and fermented with indigenous yeasts through full alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. The wine then ages on its lees in old Alsatian oak foudres for 15 months before bottling.

The result is dry and mineral, with no perceptible residual sugar. The palate is dense and juicy with a distinctly saline finish — a characteristic of the Kritt terroir. At 12.5% ABV, the wine stays focused and food-friendly rather than heavy.

Note: the existing product listing incorrectly lists the grape as Riesling. Kritt is consistently produced from Pinot Blanc and Pinot Auxerrois across all vintages. This has been confirmed by the domaine, multiple certified retailers, and the SAQ.

A natural with Alsatian classics: choucroute garnie, tarte flambee, or white asparagus with hollandaise. The saline, mineral finish also works well with briny shellfish like oysters, clams, or langoustines. Soft-ripened cheeses like Munster or mild chevre hold up nicely to the wine's acidity.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Marc Kreydenweiss

Domaine Marc Kreydenweiss is based in Andlau, a village in the Bas-Rhin, roughly halfway between Strasbourg and Colmar. The family has been growing grapes in Andlau across 13 generations, with documented roots in the area going back to the 18th century. Marc Kreydenweiss took over the domaine in 1971 and was among the first winemakers in Europe to adopt biodynamic viticulture, introducing the practice in 1989. He was also a founding member of the Biodyvin producer association. His son Antoine has managed the estate since 2007.

The domaine holds 13.5 hectares across 25 parcels, including four grands crus: Kastelberg, Wiebelsberg, Moenchberg, and Kirchberg de Barr. The vineyards are certified organic through Ecocert and biodynamic through Biodyvin. Soils vary dramatically across the holdings — blue-grey schist, pink Vosges sandstone, granite, clay-limestone, and iron-rich clay — giving each cuvee a distinct geological character. Since 2016, Antoine has also sourced grapes from a small group of local growers farming organically or biodynamically.

Winemaking follows a minimalist approach: hand-harvesting with sorting, slow whole-bunch pneumatic pressing, native yeast fermentation, full malolactic fermentation, and extended lees aging in old Alsatian oak foudres. Sulfite additions are minimal and applied only before bottling. Each vintage label is illustrated by a different artist, a practice the domaine has maintained since 1984.

Wine region

Alsace, France

Alsace runs roughly 110 miles north to south along the eastern French border with Germany, between the Vosges Mountains to the west and the Rhine River to the east. The Vosges create a pronounced rain shadow, making the region one of the driest in France, with Colmar averaging around 500mm of rainfall per year. The resulting semi-continental climate — hot, sunny summers and cold winters — gives grapes a long, slow ripening season and produces wines with bracing natural acidity.

Vineyards sit on the eastern slopes of the Vosges foothills at altitudes ranging from 175 to 420 meters, planted on a geologically diverse mosaic of granite, limestone, schist, sandstone, and clay. The region is divided into two departments: Bas-Rhin in the north and Haut-Rhin in the south. Three main appellations structure production: AOC Alsace (the majority), AOC Alsace Grand Cru (51 delimited crus restricted to Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer), and AOC Cremant d'Alsace for traditional-method sparkling wines. About 90 percent of production is white wine.
