Tasting notes

Verano is genuinely unusual: a seven-variety field-blend rosé from the same organically farmed plot in Upper Moutere, co-fermented in three lots and assembled into one cohesive wine each year. The Gewürztraminer and Syrah give it a lifted spice note that you don't expect from something this light and juicy, while Moutere clay keeps the acidity precise and the finish clean.

Verano (Spanish for summer) is Alex Craighead's field-blend rosé, incorporating all seven varieties planted across his organic vineyards in Upper Moutere, Nelson: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. The grapes grow on Moutere Series clay and brown gravel soils, which retain moisture and add structure to the fruit. White varieties outnumber red in the blend, though the exact proportions shift with each vintage.

Winemaking is direct and low-intervention. The seven varieties are co-fermented in three separate lots using a native yeast starter culture that Craighead builds each harvest by naturally fermenting a small batch of crushed grapes. Techniques across the lots include stem inclusion, direct press, and short skin contact. Everything is fermented and aged in stainless steel, then blended before bottling unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfur. Sulfites measure below 10 mg/L.

The result is pale pink with red-fruit aromatics: cherry, strawberry, and floral notes with a thread of spice from the Gewürztraminer and Syrah. The palate is dry, with brisk acidity and an easy, mouthwatering finish. This is a wine built for the table, not the cellar.

Works well with charcuterie, fresh goat cheese, or a simple green salad with citrus dressing. The wine's spice notes from Gewürztraminer and Syrah hold up to lightly spiced dishes like Thai larb or Vietnamese spring rolls. Also solid alongside grilled whole fish or raw oysters.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Kindeli

Alex Craighead studied oenology at Lincoln University in Christchurch, then accumulated vintage experience across the Hunter Valley, Marlborough, Okanagan Valley, Yarra Valley, Waipara, Barbaresco, Barolo, McLaren Vale, Central Otago, Riverland, and Burgundy. He later worked as a flying winemaker in Corsica, Languedoc, and Bordeaux before founding Kindeli in 2014 in Martinborough alongside his partner Josefina Venturino. In 2016 they relocated to Nelson, purchasing an existing organic winery and vineyard in Upper Moutere.

Kindeli now farms 11 hectares across four vineyards — a mix of owned and leased land — with soils ranging from Moutere Series Clay to gravel and silt. All vineyards are farmed organically, without synthetic inputs. Craighead uses sulfur, seaweed, compost, bat guano, and copper only when necessary. Each spring before veraison, a flock of sheep grazes between the rows to mow cover crops and remove leaves around young clusters, improving airflow and reducing rot pressure.

In the winery, Craighead builds a native yeast starter culture each harvest by naturally fermenting a small batch of crushed grapes, then adds it gradually to the must to ensure clean, vigorous fermentations. He works with stainless steel tanks, neutral oak barrels, polyethylene vats, and clay amphorae, employing skin fermentation, direct pressing, carbonic maceration, and delestage depending on the wine. All wines are bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfur, using carbon-neutral Nomacorc closures made from sugarcane byproducts.

Wine region

Nelson, New Zealand

Nelson sits at the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island, separated from Marlborough to the east by the Richmond Ranges and flanked by the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks. It records over 2,400 sunshine hours annually, more than any other New Zealand wine region. The climate is maritime, moderated by Tasman Sea breezes that keep summer temperatures warm without excessive heat, and long, dry autumns allow for an extended, slow ripening season.

The region divides into two sub-regions with meaningfully different soils. The Waimea Plains, closer to the coast, sit on stony alluvial silty soils from ancient riverbeds that drain freely and favor aromatic whites. The Moutere Hills, where Kindeli farms, feature gravelly silt-loam over a clay base — the Moutere Series Clay — which retains moisture and imparts greater structure and texture, particularly suited to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and the aromatic varieties Craighead has planted. Nelson accounts for roughly 2% of New Zealand's total vineyard area and is home to around 40 boutique wineries.
