Tasting notes

At 10.5% ABV with no added sulfur, this is a fragile and honest wine: fresh strawberry and pink pepper aromatics, a lightly cloudy raspberry hue, and a crunchy, juicy texture that makes it hard to put down. The blend changes every vintage, which keeps it genuinely interesting year after year.

Primavera is Kindeli's seasonal pet-nat, made from a four-grape blend of Syrah, Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Chardonnay grown on Moutere Series clay and gravel soils in Upper Moutere, Nelson. The red varieties are whole-cluster pressed and the whites are soaked on skins overnight. Fermentation proceeds in stainless steel tank; when sugar reaches around 10 g/L the wine is bottled in early spring to finish fermenting in the bottle, trapping CO2 and producing natural carbonation. It is not disgorged, not fined, not filtered, and no sulfur is added.

The result is a lightly cloudy, low-alcohol pet-nat (10.5% ABV) with a deep raspberry-rose hue. Expect aromas of fresh strawberry, red berry, and pink pepper, with a juicy, crunchy texture and bright acidity. The wine has a reputation for being very lively under pressure, so open with care.

Kindeli's home vineyard in Upper Moutere has been certified organic since 1997, making it one of the oldest certified organic vineyards in New Zealand. Alex Craighead and Josefina Venturino also source fruit from a small number of other organic growers in the Nelson region. Vines are maintained using sulfur, seaweed, compost, bat guano, and copper only when strictly necessary. Cover crops of clover fix nitrogen between rows, and neighboring sheep graze the vineyard in spring to manage vigor and open the canopy.

The Primavera blend shifts from vintage to vintage. The 2022 follows the red-fruit, rose-hued style using Syrah and Pinot Noir pressed whole-cluster alongside skin-contacted Riesling and Chardonnay. Drink young and cold, straight from the fridge.

The bright acidity and low tannin make this a natural match for raw or lightly cooked seafood: oysters, tuna tartare, sushi, and smoked trout all work well. It also handles charcuterie and fresh chevre without getting overwhelmed. Drink well chilled as an aperitif or alongside light, herb-forward dishes.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Kindeli

Kindeli is the project of Alex Craighead and Josefina Venturino. Craighead, born in Australia and raised in New Zealand, studied wine at Lincoln University before working across multiple wine regions internationally. He and Venturino began experimenting with low-intervention winemaking in 2013 and established Kindeli as a formal business in 2014, initially in Martinborough, before relocating to Upper Moutere in the Nelson region.

The Kindeli home vineyard in Upper Moutere has been certified organic since 1997, making it among the oldest certified organic sites in New Zealand. Craighead farms approximately 11 hectares across four owned and leased parcels with soil types ranging from Moutere Series clay to gravel and silt. Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah are all planted. The organic regime relies on sulfur, seaweed, compost, bat guano, and copper only when strictly necessary. Cover crops of clover fix nitrogen between rows, and neighboring sheep graze the vineyard in spring before veraison to open the canopy and manage vigor. Craighead also sources fruit from a small number of additional organic growers in the region, including old-vine Pinot Noir and Chardonnay blocks.

In the winery, Craighead creates a native yeast starter culture by crushing a small volume of grapes and allowing them to ferment spontaneously, then adds this gradually to incoming must to ensure healthy fermentations without commercial yeast. Vessels include stainless steel tanks, neutral oak barrels, polyethylene vats, and amphora. Techniques vary by cuvee and can include skin fermentation, direct pressing, and carbonic maceration. All wines are bottled by gravity, corked by hand using Noma Corks made from recycled sugarcane, and released unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfur. Kindeli wines carry no SO2 additions; the separate Don label uses minimal added sulfur.

Wine region

Nelson, New Zealand

Nelson sits at the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island, sheltered on three sides by mountains, with the Richmond Range separating it from Marlborough to the east. The region records roughly 2,400 to 2,500 sunshine hours per year, more than any other New Zealand wine region, while Tasman Sea breezes moderate temperatures and long, dry autumns extend hang time. The Nelson Geographical Indication was registered in 2018 under New Zealand's Geographical Indications (Wine and Spirits) Registration Act 2006.

Nelson divides into two distinct sub-regions. The Waimea Plains feature stony alluvial silty soils derived from ancient riverbeds, producing lighter, fresher wines with bright aromatics. The Moutere Hills, where Kindeli's home vineyard sits in Upper Moutere, are characterized by gravelly silt-loam over a Moutere Series clay base. This clay retains moisture and imparts greater structure and concentration, particularly to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region produces outstanding Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer across roughly 40 boutique producers.
