Tasting notes

The 80% direct-press base gives this Grenache Noir a translucent, almost rosé-like color with vivid cranberry and wild strawberry fruit, while the three-week maceration adds enough grip and savory depth to keep it serious. It is the kind of wine that collapses the distinction between red and rosé in the best possible way.

In the Shadow of the Morning Sun is 100% Grenache Noir sourced from a single vineyard in the southern Ardèche village of Valvignères, where the morning sun disappears behind a mountain peak before it reaches the vines. Anders Frederik Steen and Anne Bruun Blauert work this parcel in collaboration with Gérald and Jocelyne Oustric of Domaine du Mazel, whose vineyards sit on clay and limestone soils and have been farmed organically for decades.

The wine is made from 80% direct-press juice and 20% destemmed grapes, with three weeks of maceration in fiber cuves fermented outside under the open sky using only native yeasts. Nothing is added or removed at any stage: no fining, no filtration, no sulfur additions. Blending decisions are made at harvest, and the juice ferments as one.

The result lands somewhere between a structured rosé and a light red — transparent in color, with tart red fruit and a savory, mineral edge that reflects the clay-limestone terroir of the Ardèche valley floor. The 1.5L magnum format preserves the wine particularly well and allows for slower, more gradual development in bottle.

Released as non-vintage, reflecting Steen's philosophy that each cuvée is an expression of a specific moment rather than a calendar year. The wine is bottled under Vin de France classification, which gives Steen freedom to work across parcels and vintages without AOC constraints.

Works well with charcuterie, rillettes, or a simple board of aged comté. The wine's acidity and light structure make it a natural match for roasted chicken, grilled duck breast, or a navarin of lamb. Serve it slightly cool, around 58F, where the red fruit and mineral edge come through most clearly.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Anders Frederik Steen

Anders Frederik Steen is a Danish winemaker based in the village of Valvignères in the southern Ardèche, where he lives with his wife and collaborator Anne Bruun Blauert. Before making wine, Steen worked as a chef and then as a sommelier at Noma in Copenhagen starting in 2007, later co-opening the restaurants Relæ and Manfreds and running a natural wine import company in Denmark.

Steen began making wine in 2013 in collaboration with Jura winemaker Jean-Marc Brignot, sourcing fruit from Gérald and Jocelyne Oustric of Domaine du Mazel in Valvignères. Their partnership lasted three years. By 2017, Steen and Blauert had moved permanently to Valvignères and begun farming their own parcels. They now work approximately four hectares of their own vines alongside continued collaborations with the Oustric family in Ardèche and the Bannwarth family in Obermorschwihr, Alsace. The Oustric vineyards at Le Mazel sit on clay and limestone soils and have been farmed organically for decades.

Steen makes wine from grapes and nothing else. Red grapes are either destemmed by hand or pressed directly, and white grapes are pressed in an old wooden press. Blending decisions are made at harvest so that different varieties ferment together from the start. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts, conducted outside in fiber cuves. The wines are bottled unfiltered with no added sulfur and no fining. No two vintages are made identically; maceration lengths, proportions, and grape combinations vary depending on what the harvest offers.

Wine region

Ardèche, France

The Ardèche department sits between the Rhône river to the east and the Massif Central plateau to the west, roughly 50 kilometers south of Lyon and 100 kilometers north of the Mediterranean. The southern half of the department, centered on the Ardèche river valley, carries the IGP Ardèche and Coteaux de l'Ardèche designations. The climate in the south is semi-continental with strong Mediterranean influence: mild winters, hot and dry summers, and significant diurnal temperature shifts that preserve acidity in the grapes.

The geology of the Ardèche is unusually varied. Soils range from clay and limestone on the valley floors and plateaus to granite and gneiss in the Cévennes highlands, with schist, sandstone, and volcanic deposits also present across the region. Within the IGP Ardèche framework, producers work with a wide range of grapes including Grenache Noir, Syrah, Carignan, Merlot, Viognier, and Chardonnay. The AOC-level appellations Côtes du Vivarais, Saint-Joseph, Cornas, and Saint-Péray also fall within the department's borders, though most independent natural producers work under IGP or Vin de France classifications for maximum flexibility. Valvignères, where Steen and Blauert are based, sits in the southern Ardèche on soils of clay and limestone.
