Tasting notes

This is Gewurztraminer pushed into unfamiliar territory: three years in an un-topped demi-muid produces oxidative depth and a savoury, unctuous texture that strips the grape of its usual sweetness. Mango and dried floral notes remain, but they're framed by a structure you don't expect from this variety.

Heracles is Jean-Marc Dreyer's oxidative expression of Gewurztraminer, distinct from his standard Origin bottling. Where the Origin sees 9 to 11 months in foudre and is bottled fresh, Heracles is a macerated Gewurztraminer aged in a demi-muid for three years without topping up. That extended, un-topped aging allows a veil of yeast to develop, imparting a Jura-style oxidative character alongside the grape's signature tropical aromatics. The result is amber-orange in color and dry on the palate.

The grapes come from Dreyer's 6-hectare estate spread across 25 parcels on the clay-limestone foothills surrounding Rosheim in the Bas-Rhin, approximately 25 kilometers southwest of Strasbourg. Whole-bunch maceration precedes fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The wine is unfined, unfiltered, and produced with no added sulfites at any stage. It is released under the Vins d'Alsace AOC.

The 2018 vintage brought abundant yields across Alsace, and Dreyer's skin-contact wines fermented more cleanly than his direct-press whites that year, owing to greater yeast contact during maceration. By March 2019, the macerated wines were already dry and expressive, showing more freshness than typical at that stage of aging.

On the nose: mango, exotic floral notes, and dried spice. On the palate: dry, with a full, unctuous texture, restrained tannin from the skin contact, and a long finish shaped by gentle oxidation. Serve at cellar temperature rather than from the refrigerator to allow the wine's nuances to come through.

The oxidative, spiced character here works well with aged washed-rind cheeses like Munster d'Alsace or Epoisses. Try it with foie gras, slow-cooked pork with fruit, or dishes with coconut milk and lemongrass. The dry, tannic texture also holds up to mildly spiced curries.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Jean-Marc Dreyer

Jean-Marc Dreyer is based in Rosheim, Bas-Rhin, approximately 25 kilometers southwest of Strasbourg. The family estate, Dreyer et Fils, dates to 1830. Jean-Marc took over from his father in 2003 and began converting to biodynamic farming that same year, applying Steiner-directed preparations from the start. Full biodynamic certification followed in 2014. The estate holds 6 hectares spread across 25 parcels on the clay-limestone hillsides surrounding Rosheim.

Dreyer trained at the Obernai viticultural school and completed a formative apprenticeship with Patrick Meyer in the nearby village of Nothalten. Meyer is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of natural winemaking in Alsace. Dreyer has also cultivated close working relationships with producers outside the region, including Patrick Bouju in the Auvergne and Jean-Louis Pinto near Limoux. Part of the estate is now worked by horse, with Dreyer expanding this practice over time. Since 2020, tractor passes through the vineyards have been eliminated except for harvest logistics.

Dreyer's whites are predominantly made with whole-bunch skin maceration, a practice he notes is rooted in Alsace tradition, before pressing and transfer to large wooden foudres or demi-muids. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts only. No sulfur, fining agents, or filtration are used. Dreyer does not top up his barrels, allowing a veil of yeast to develop; this controlled oxidative exposure is a defining feature of his longer-aged cuvees like Heracles. The Heracles Gewurztraminer is aged in a 600-liter demi-muid for three years without topping, distinguishing it from his Origin range, which is bottled after 9 to 11 months.

Wine region

Alsace, France

Alsace sits in the northeastern corner of France along the Rhine River, bordered by the Vosges Mountains to the west and Germany to the east. The Vosges create a rain shadow that makes Alsace one of the driest and sunniest wine regions in France, producing a long growing season with significant diurnal temperature variation. The region stretches roughly 120 kilometers from Marlenheim in the north to Thann in the south, with most vineyards concentrated on the foothills and lower slopes of the Vosges. Rosheim, where Jean-Marc Dreyer is based, sits in the Bas-Rhin (Lower Rhine), the northern department of the region.

Alsace produces wine under three main appellations: Alsace AOC, Alsace Grand Cru AOC, and Cremant d'Alsace AOC. The Grand Cru designation covers 51 named sites focused on four noble varieties: Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat, and Gewurztraminer. The soils across the region are exceptionally diverse, ranging from granite and sandstone on the steeper Vosges slopes to clay-limestone, marl, and loess on the lower foothills and plain. The parcels around Rosheim sit primarily on clay-limestone (argilo-calcaire) soils. Gewurztraminer is one of Alsace's defining grapes, typically highly aromatic with notes of lychee, rose, and spice; in Dreyer's hands, extended maceration and oxidative aging reframe that aromatic profile entirely.
