Gut Oggau Eugenie marks the debut vintage from Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe's experimental PIWI vineyard in Burgenland, Austria. This field blend combines disease-resistant hybrid grape varieties of Austrian origin, planted in high density in 2018 on a plot worked exclusively by horses and hands. The grapes are hand-harvested, then undergo a 3-day skin maceration before fermentation in open barrels. Gut Oggau Eugenie 2022 ages for 10 months in large neutral barrels. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, with no sulfur added. Only 414 bottles produced in this inaugural vintage. 12% ABV.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Gut Oggau

Eduard Tscheppe and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselböck established Gut Oggau in 2007, reviving a 17th-century winery that had been abandoned for two decades in the village of Oggau overlooking Lake Neusiedl. Eduard brought winemaking experience from his father's operation in Styria; Stephanie's family owned Taubenkobel, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Burgenland. The estate's prolonged neglect proved beneficial—chemical residues had cleared from the soils, enabling immediate conversion to biodynamic practices. Today, Gut Oggau maintains full Demeter certification.

Eugenie represents the newest and most forward-looking member of Gut Oggau's fictional family. Unlike the estate's other wines made from traditional Vitis vinifera varieties, Eugenie comes from a dedicated PIWI vineyard that Eduard personally conceptualized and planted in 2018. This approximately two-hectare plot, containing around 13,000-14,000 vines in high-density planting, is worked entirely by horse to avoid soil compaction. The PIWI varieties—disease-resistant hybrids bred from Austrian parent grapes including Grüner Veltliner and Welschriesling—require no chemical treatments, representing what Eduard and Stephanie call their "wine garden Eden."

The 2022 vintage yielded only 414 bottles, making Eugenie among the rarest wines in the Gut Oggau portfolio. The estate describes Eugenie's character as pointing toward the future while honoring the past: "Her home is the future, her ancient soul honest, her wisdom astral and inspiring." Eduard has stated that Gut Oggau will plant exclusively PIWI varieties going forward, viewing these hybrids as essential for climate-resilient viticulture. Annual production across all Gut Oggau wines averages 40,000 bottles.

Wine region

Burgenland, Austria

Burgenland stretches along Austria's eastern border with Hungary, its landscape shaped by the Pannonian Plain and the shallow waters of Lake Neusiedl. Encompassing approximately 32,200 acres of vineyards, this is Austria's second-largest wine region and its warmest—conditions that favor both red wine production and the development of botrytized dessert wines for which the area is celebrated.

The village of Oggau occupies the lake's western shore within the Neusiedlersee zone. Soils here vary from gravel deposits near the water to limestone and slate on higher ground, providing diverse terroir expressions across the estate's holdings. The Pannonian climate delivers warm continental conditions: hot air from Hungary meets cooler Alpine breezes from the west, extending the growing season while enabling grapes to retain natural acidity.

Burgenland comprises four DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) zones: Neusiedlersee surrounds the lake; Leithaberg in the north showcases mineral-driven whites and reds; Mittelburgenland centers on Blaufränkisch, Austria's signature red variety; Eisenberg in the southeast produces structured, iron-inflected reds.

As climate change impacts viticulture across Europe, forward-thinking Austrian producers have begun experimenting with PIWI (Pilzwiderstandsfähige) varieties—disease-resistant hybrids bred to require minimal or no chemical treatments. These grapes, developed from crosses involving traditional Austrian varieties like Grüner Veltliner and Welschriesling, represent a potential future for sustainable winegrowing in regions facing increasingly challenging conditions. Burgenland's natural wine community has embraced this experimentation, with estates like Gut Oggau leading the way in demonstrating that PIWI wines can deliver both quality and environmental resilience.
