Product description

Gut Oggau Bertholdi Rot 2022 is the flagship red cuvée from Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe's biodynamic estate in Burgenland, Austria. This 100% Blaufränkisch comes from a single vineyard of 60-year-old vines planted in limestone and gravel soils. The grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented spontaneously in large old oak vats before being pressed using the estate's restored 200-year-old vertical screw press. Gut Oggau Bertholdi Rot 2022 ages for two years in used 500-liter barrels. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, with no sulfur added. Produced in tiny quantities.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Gut Oggau

Eduard Tscheppe and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselböck founded Gut Oggau in 2007 after acquiring an abandoned 17th-century winery in the village of Oggau overlooking Lake Neusiedl. Eduard brought winemaking experience from his father's operation in Styria; Stephanie's family owned Taubenkobel, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Burgenland. The estate had sat untended for approximately 20 years—a circumstance that proved advantageous, as chemical residues had cleared from the soils, enabling immediate conversion to biodynamic practices.

Today, Gut Oggau maintains full Demeter certification across roughly 25 hectares. Among the estate's treasured equipment is a restored 200-year-old vertical screw press, reserved exclusively for the grandparent wines: Bertholdi and Mechthild. These top-tier cuvées come from the oldest vines and receive the most traditional treatment. Annual production across all wines averages 40,000 bottles, making these among Austria's most allocated.

The Gut Oggau concept centers on a fictional family. Each wine represents a family member with a distinct personality, illustrated by artist Jung von Matt. Three generations comprise the lineup: children (Theodora, Atanasius, Winifred) from younger vines yield lighter, energetic wines; parents (Joschuari, Emmeram, Timotheus, Josephine) derive from warmer sites producing fuller-bodied cuvées; grandparents (Mechthild, Bertholdi) represent the oldest vines and most structured expressions.

Bertholdi embodies the family patriarch—Mechthild's husband, described as a steadfast Burgenländer who remains connected to the earth yet full of vitality. As 100% Blaufränkisch from 60-year-old vines, this wine receives the estate's most intensive treatment: fermentation in large old oak, pressing on the antique vertical press, and two full years of barrel aging. The result is the estate's most traditional and age-worthy red.

Wine region

Burgenland, Austria

Burgenland extends along Austria's eastern border with Hungary, its terrain defined by the Pannonian Plain and the shallow expanse of Lake Neusiedl. Encompassing approximately 32,200 acres of vineyards, this is Austria's second-largest wine region and its warmest—conditions that have made it the country's premier zone for red wine production. Lake Neusiedl, one of Europe's largest steppe lakes, moderates temperature extremes and generates humidity that influences growing conditions throughout the season.

Oggau sits on the lake's western shore within the Neusiedlersee zone. Hillside vineyards above the village feature limestone and gravel soils—geological formations that produce wines with pronounced structure and mineral character. The Pannonian climate delivers warm continental conditions: hot air from Hungary collides with cooler Alpine breezes descending from the west, extending the growing season while allowing grapes to retain natural acidity despite the warmth.

Burgenland comprises four DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) zones. Neusiedlersee surrounds the lake; Leithaberg in the north showcases mineral-driven wines from ancient soils; Mittelburgenland centers on Blaufränkisch, Austria's signature red variety; Eisenberg in the southeast produces structured, iron-inflected reds.

Blaufränkisch thrives in Burgenland's warm climate, developing the ripeness necessary to balance its naturally high acidity and firm tannins. Old vines—those 50 years and older—yield concentrated fruit with greater complexity and depth. The variety produces wines with dark fruit, pepper, and distinctive mineral undertones that reflect specific terroir. Natural and biodynamic winemaking has flourished here, with estates like Gut Oggau, Claus Preisinger, and Meinklang establishing Burgenland as a destination for minimal intervention viticulture.
